PIAA Wrestling Champion School List

PIAA Wrestling Champion School List

Postby Dan_Burkholder » Sat Jul 24, 2010 8:03 pm

Kind of an odd question (and I know it's in the state book every year, but I don't have one) - Could anyone tell me where I can find the list of total state champions per school in PA? For example:

Clearfield - 50
Canonsburg - 40
Easton - 30
Etc.

Thanks!

^^^Norm Palovscik sells an incredible "PIAA History" that covers everything, including the bouts, and I think it starts circa 1928 up to present. I don't want to post purchase info, but I'm sure you can find someone who knows how to order it. Man, those Art Weiss Clearfield years were fabulous, and today, some PA natives don't even know who coach Weiss was.

Here, this was recently compiled for all PIAA sports; see the columns near the end for both individual wrestling and team wrestling titles:

School Titles
Clearfield 40
Canonsburg 21/Canon-McMillan 15 36
Easton 34
Waynesburg Central 30
Trinity (Washington) 28
North Allegheny 26
State College 24
Reynolds 22
Littlestown 20
Lock Haven 20
Northampton 20
Shamokin 18
Nazareth 17
Benton 15
Bald Eagle Nittany 14
Connellsville 13
E.L. Myers 13
Hughesville 13
Mount Lebanon 13
Shikellamy 13
Washington 13
Bethlehem Catholic 12
Bethlehem Liberty 12
Tyrone 12
Greenville 11
Line Mountain 11
North Schuylkill 11
Bellefonte 10
DuBois 10
Forty Fort 10
Greensburg-Salem 10
McGuffey 10
Saucon Valley 10
Wilson Area (Boro) 10

Here, I was in too much of a hurry to do this when I first posted the link. (Mr. RVR may not be from PA. Or else he was in a hurry too.)

I expanded his list to any school with double-digit champions. Also, I put Canonsburg and Canon-Mac together, since it is my understanding that Canon-Mac is the current version of the old Canonsburg HS (plus presumably more).

Note too, that the list mixes AAA and AA. This is probably unavoidable, since, due to the historic nature of the data, some schools may have changed divisions, plus some schools 'wrestle up', plus there probably weren't always two divisions, etc.

Reynolds gets it 23rd and 24th PIAA state champions this year!! Beckman and a combination of a Mathews brother or D'urso. Not sure who it will be but I think by the end of the season Reynolds will be at 24!!

Central Mountain HS is the combination of Lock Haven HS (20), Bald Eagle Nittany HS (14), and Sugar Valley HS (2)(I think only Trap McCormack's soph and jr. years). Add the 5 Alton brother titles since the schools combined and you get 41.

papride -
you're right that Reynolds may catch State College, given that SC graduated their 3 state qualifiers last year. But, at the same time, Canon-Mac is closing in on Clearfield. C-M had a freshman champion last year (Schram) and also returns 3 year qualifier Catalano, who took third last year after only losing to champion Dziewa, who graduated. Between the two guys they are likely to get at least one champ and may get two.

For the team titles, is that the dual meet tournament, individual tournament or both combined?

No idea why I typed Waynesboro or Reynoldsburg. I clearly wasn't paying attention. Yes, I am from PA, those were just dumb typos.

As long as we're speculating state champions to catch teams in front of them, Mitch Minotti from Easton is my pick for a kid in PA who is going to make the jump from good to great this year. He was a scramble with Buckman away from going to state finals last year, and I think before his career is over he runs Easton's total to 35. (and 24th since the AAA/AA split, which I believe is the most of any school). I think they'll pass Clearfield eventually, and hopefully Mitch (or somebody in a huge surprise) inches them a little closer this year.

And I just pulled the team titles from the website that was linked to in an earlier post, but I'm pretty sure its dual and individual tournament combined. That skews the numbers for teams that have been good in the past decade, as they've had a shot to "double dip" state titles for the sake of that list.

Team championships have to be combined from the individual tournament and the team duals. Now that I think about it Reynolds has the talent this season to pass State College. Matthews (4th at PIAA as sophmore) is back from injury and ready to make a run at a title his senior year. Beckman can keep his undeafeated season rolling from last year straight to another title. D'urso has put in alot of hardwork this summer and is looking for a spot on top as a Junior. Reynolds should also be a contender for another state title.

Thanks everyone for quick replies and detailed information. I was encouraged to see where my alma mater stacked up.

I'm not much of a poster but have been reading for many years. This board is great - full of polite, knowledgeable folks.

I wanna say the dual titles started in 2003 with the weight change of adding 215. Not positive though.

PIAA Dual titles started in 1999. Before that it was just each district having their own dual tourneys.

I think the dual champs for AAA are as follows:

1999: Bald Eagle Area
2000: Northampton
2001-2004: Easton
2005: Connellsville
2006: Upper Perkiomen
2007: Nazareth
2008-2010: Central Dauphin
I think BEA in '99, Northampton in 2000, Easton in 01-02, Connellsville in '05, Upper Perk in '06, and '08 and '09 Central Dauphin have won both. But this is all off the top of my head, I'll get actual facts a little later.

For AA I'm not as sure. I know Reynolds has a bunch, Wilson I believe won it twice, Northern Lehigh has won once. I can look it up and get a real list. Again, I'll actually look it up later.
