2/4/13 Takedown Wrestling Media Dual Impact Index

Postby SetonHallPirate » Sun Feb 03, 2013 6:04 pm

Here's a guideline to what the numbers all mean:

Individual Rankings: The basic idea is an iterative one. Begin with all
wrestlers set to an even rating -- 100 in this case. Then, for each match wrestled, give each wrestler the value of their opponent's rating plus or minus a factor for winning or losing the match -- 30 by decision, 40 by major/tech-four, 50 by tech-five, 60 by fall. Total all of a wrestler's results, divide by the number of matches wrestled, and that's the end of a cycle. Then use those numbers as the start of the next cycle until you get the same results for each wrestler for two consecutive cycles.

Note: Wrestlers will not be listed unless either (a) they have competed in 4 team-scoring dates of competition if the team's entire schedule includes 13 or fewer such dates, 5 team-scoring dates of competition if the team's entire schedule includes 14 or more such dates, or (b) they have wrestled ten matches against wrestlers meeting criteria (a). If the wrestler meets criteria (b), and has not wrestled attached in a team-scoring event, they will be listed, but will not be eligible to be ranked.

Dual-Result Rankings: Based on results of dual meets only. The ranking is very similar to the Individual ranking, except that the factor is 30 points plus one point for each match the dual was won or lost by. Criteria point for otherwise-tied duals is not included in this figure.
MOV=points earned based on margin of victory
WL=points earned based on wins or losses

Tournament: Done based on the individual rankings, on a 21-17-14.5-13.5-11-10-7.5-6.5-3-3-3-3-2.5-2.5-2.5-2.5-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1 basis, to simulate non-bonus scoring at NCAA's.

Dual-Component Ranking (debuting here): Based on the Individual Ranking numbers, each team is compared side-by-side with each other team. Teams are given three points for their wrestler being ahead of another team's wrestler, plus one additional point for being 35, 45, and 55 points ahead, to signify major decisions, technical falls, and falls. Teams are scored based on the numbers of such comparisons won, with ties broken by head-to-head comparisons, and then by, if the teams are tied, dual-advancement tiebreak criteria.

Tyler Gaff is an incredible talent, as NPope pointed out, but he's not so good that he should be rated at both 133 and 141.

What is the policy on redshirts in these rankings? For example, why is Devin Carter listed at 141 and no Mason Beckman at 133, Corey Clark at 125?
I'm paraphrasing, but I recently heard Bill Zadick discussing weight cutting with a very talented high school wrestler. "Every moment you're in the wrestling room cutting weight is a moment you could've been working on technique and getting better," said Zadick. "Wrestling isn't fun if you're sucked out trying to lose weight. There is no enjoyment in cutting weight. You're too young for wrestling to feel like it's a job you hate. Enjoy wrestling. Wrestling is fun."

From the first post:
Note: Wrestlers will not be listed unless either (a) they have competed in 4 team-scoring dates of competition if the team's entire schedule includes 13 or fewer such dates, 5 team-scoring dates of competition if the team's entire schedule includes 14 or more such dates, or (b) they have wrestled ten matches against wrestlers meeting criteria (a). If the wrestler meets criteria (b), and has not wrestled attached in a team-scoring event, they will be listed, but will not be eligible to be ranked.

Thanks. I always was kind of a skip to the end, don't read the directions kind of guy.

He's listed at both weights, because he qualifies at both, but both him and Tom Kelliher are actually ranked at only one of them, specifically, the one that is more beneficial to the team from a dual perspective. Believe it or not, that means Kelliher at 133 and Graff at 141. (Actually, Graff ranks higher at 141 from a tournament-strength perspective as well)
