Final 2011-2012 Takedown Wrestling Media Dual Impact Index

Final 2011-2012 Takedown Wrestling Media Dual Impact Index

Postby SetonHallPirate » Sat Mar 17, 2012 5:22 pm

Here's a guideline to what the numbers all mean:

Individual Rankings: The basic idea is an iterative one. Begin with all wrestlers set to an even rating -- 100 in this case. Then, for each match wrestled, give each wrestler the value of their opponent's rating plus or minus a factor for winning or losing the match -- 30 by decision, 40 by major/tech-four, 50 by tech-five, 60 by fall. Total all of a wrestler's results, divide by the number of matches wrestled, and that's the end of a cycle. Then use those numbers as the start of the next cycle until you get the same results for each wrestler for two consecutive cycles.

Note: Wrestlers will not be listed unless either (a) they have competed in 4 team-scoring dates of competition if the team's entire schedule includes 13 or fewer such dates, 5 team-scoring dates of competition if the team's entire schedule includes 14 or more such dates, (b) they participated in their national qualifier, or (c) they have wrestled ten matches against wrestlers qualifying under (a and b). If the wrestler qualified under (c), they will be listed, but not ranked, if they have yet to compete attached in any team-scoring dates of competition.

Dual-Component Rankings: Based on the Individual Ranking numbers, each team is compared side-by-side with each other team. Teams are given three points for their wrestler being ahead of another team's wrestler, plus one additional point for being 35, 45, and 55 points ahead, to signify major decisions, technical falls, and falls. Teams are scored based on the numbers of such comparisons won, with ties broken by head-to-head comparisons, and then by, if the teams are tied, dual-advancement tiebreak criteria.

Color coding: red-have not wrestled attached in a team-scoring event all season; yellow-participated in their national qualifier; green-participated at the 2012 NCAA Wrestling Championships.

Postby SetonHallPirate » Sat Mar 17, 2012 9:39 pm

Improvement in Dual-Component ranking from year to year (10 spots or more). Ties are broken by better ranking. Teams with status change have been stripped from rankings in the applicable year, so only the 77 programs that were in both final rankings are listed, and considered in each year's ranking:

Improved:

1. Ohio State, +33 (38>5)
2. Michigan State, +19 (51>32)
3. Appalachian State, +19 (63>44)
4. Harvard, +18 (58>40)
5. Wyoming, +14 (25>11)
6. Edinboro, +14 (39>25)
7. Illinois, +13 (21>8)
8. Old Dominion, +13 (44>31)
9. Eastern Michigan, +13 (49>36)
10. Binghamton, +12 (36>24)
11. Campbell, +12 (76>64)
12. North Carolina, +11 (46>35)
13. Chattanooga, +10 (43>33)
