Match fixing news from soccer

On the recent match-fixing scandal in international soccer:

Something doesn't add up here.

The New York Times estimate is that there is $140 billion bet illegally (and a trillion dollars legally?) on sports per year. This investigation turned up 150 international matches fixed in the last two years alone. Clearly those matches, plus another three hundred other rigged matches, resulted in much more than just 8 million euros worth of profits for the fixers?

I know that betting on wrestling is essentially nonexistant here in the US. What about overseas? Is it common for bets to be placed on matches or tournaments in Russia, Iran, or Azerbaijan?

Given the recent struggles, sometimes military, among ex-Soviet countries in the Caucasus Mtn region [where roughly 50% of the medals are won]; it isn't likely there is widespread betting among them. The Republic of Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Russian Republics of Chechnya, N. Ossetia and Dagestan have far greater wagers to contemplate than the outcome of a wrestling match.

Most of the wrestling supporters in the region are more interested in maintaining an avenue for its best wrestlers to compete effectively than betting on the outcome of the match. :(
