No Holds Barred: Larry Nugent and the Marketing of Wrestling
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Larry Nugent, the Director of Development of USA Wrestling (http://themat.com).
For the second year in a row, USA Wrestling has received a special marketing award from the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) for the most unique and creative National Governing Body marketing initiatives for the year. This award recognized the success of the 2009 Night of Champions, held November 9, 2009, in Bernardsville, New Jersey, and organized by USA Wrestling (http://themat.com/section.php?section_id=3&page=showarticle&ArticleID=21294).
We sat down with Larry Nugent in New York Wednesday afternoon to discuss the marketing of wrestling and what challenges are still faced in continuing to popularize the world's oldest sport.
Also, the day after our discussion, USA Wrestling announced the launching of a new social network devoted to wrestling, called USA Wrestling Nation (http://www.usawrestlingnation.com). It is free and easy to join, and all those interested in wrestling are encouraged to join.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman and Gary Abbott, the Director of Communications of USA Wrestling, preview the 2010 World Wrestling Championships.
This event takes place Monday, September 6, through Sunday, September 12, at the Sports Centre Olimpiskiy in Moscow, Russia.
USA Wrestling has a special section on the World Championships on TheMat.com (http://www.themat.com/specialevents/2010/worlds/default.php?EventID=23959).
Our interview previewed this event by focusing upon many of the top and champion wrestlers from around the world in the three styles which will be contested: men's and women's freestyle wrestling, and Greco-Roman wrestling. We discussed the U.S. entries this year, and their chances of winning medals against the international competition.
We also discussed the significance of this event being held in Russia this year, the always-controversial rules of wrestling, the annual predictions of international wrestling journalists of gold medal winners (including both of us), how to follow this event live, and more.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with mixed martial arts fighter and former wrestler Kenny "Deuce" Garner, who will fight in the heavyweight finals of the M-1 Global Americas Selection tournament Saturday, September 18, 2010, at Bally's Casino Hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey. His opponent will be Pat Bennett, who had been a two-time Div. 3 All-American wrestler at SUNY-Brockport. We spoke with the colorful Kenny Garner by phone to get his view on how this fight, which is expected to feature a lot of action, will go.
We open the show by discussing some of the lessons from the recently-concluded World Championships of Wrestling, which took place September 6-12 in Moscow. This was one of the most exciting world championships in recent memory, and also saw the wrestlers using some amazing techniques, but this event got little attention outside the wrestling community. We explain some of the reasons why, and offer some suggestions.
In addition, we squarely address the myth that wrestling is a "boring" sport. While some wrestlers may wrestle a boring style, the philosophy behind the sport emphasizes seeking dominance. We comment on this issue both regarding wrestling as a sport, and wrestling and wrestlers in mixed martial arts, borrowing some advice from wrestling legend Dan Gable.

No Holds Barred: George Hero, Midwood Wrestling Exhibition 2010, MMA, and Pindar the Poet of Ancient Greece
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again speaks with the legendary coach and founder of the Midwood High School wrestling team in Brooklyn, New York, George Hero.
Coach Hero will be one of the many current and former Midwood wrestlers, alumni, and coaches who will be competing at the Midwood Wrestling Exhibition 2010, this Saturday, October 16, beginning at noon, at the Midwood High School Gymnasium at 2839 Bedford Avenue in Brooklyn. This event will feature folkstyle, freestyle, and Greco-Roman wrestling. Coach Hero will be facing heavyweight Yuriy Petriv in the main event in a match held under NCAA rules, and with special guest referee Bob Backlund, a 1971 NCAA Div. II national champion at North Dakota State University before going into the WWWF.
There is a Facebook page with more information on this event here: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=137078449650607.
We had an enlightening and wide-ranging discussion Tuesday night with Coach Hero about the importance of this event, wrestling, and the combat sports in general. We discussed how these combat sports greatly benefit both the mind and body, and build positive values, which is especially important now in a culture which emphasizes so much negativity. We refuted many of the claims of the critics of mixed martial arts in New York, where the politicians are still keeping this sport illegal. We noted the many ways wrestling and mixed martial arts are very closely linked. And he discussed how Midwood Wrestling and the Beat The Streets organization are bringing many youths into wrestling programs for the first time.
Coach Hero also stated, "We have to go back to the ancient Greek ideals about athletics." He recommends to his athletes that they study the writings of Pindar, the great lyric poet of ancient Greece, whose writings include commentary on the Olympics and other athletic events of his era. So we read an excerpt from Pindar, and encouraged others to learn from this classic poet as well.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Kevin Jackson, the Olympic gold medalist and two-time world champion freestyle wrestler, who is starting his second season as head wrestling coach for the legendary Iowa State Cyclones (http://www.cyclones.com/SportSelect.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=10700&KEY=&SPID=4248&SPSID=46632).
The 2010-2011 college wrestling season for the Cyclones officially starts this Saturday, November 6, with dual meets against Virginia Tech and Kent State in Salem, Virginia. On Sunday, November 7, the Hokie Open takes place, also in Salem, Virginia. The highly-anticipated annual showdown between Iowa State and the defending NCAA Div. I national champions, the Iowa Hawkeyes, takes place Friday, December 3, at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa.
We spoke at length with Coach Jackson about what to expect this season, especially with the graduation of their two 2009-2010 national champions, Jake Varner and David Zabriskie. He explained the status of Andrew Long, who was a 2009-2010 runner-up as a freshman at 125 pounds, and who is not on the Cyclone roster at this time. We discussed who are expected to be the leaders on the Cyclone team this year, and which wrestlers are the likely starters, including two-time All-American Jon Reader. He also stated that witnessing live an Iowa State-Iowa wrestling dual meet is one of the greatest experiences a sports fan could ever have, and much more.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with two-time U.S. Olympic freestyle wrestler and unbeaten mixed martial arts fighter Daniel Cormier (http://twitter.com/Cormier2010).
On Friday, January 7, at the Strikeforce Challengers mixed martial arts card in Nashville, Tennessee, and shown live in the U.S. on Showtime, he notched his seventh consecutive victory with a dominating unanimous decision over Devin Cole.
We spoke with Daniel Cormier by phone on Sunday about his latest victory and his plans in mixed martial arts. We discussed the technique he used in this fight, including his improved striking. Topics included how he has advanced as a fighter since his pro debut in September 2009, the possibility of him competing as an alternate in the upcoming Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix, whether or not he will stay at heavyweight, his training at American Kickboxing Academy with fighters such as former wrestler and current UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez, the difficulties of trying to compete in wrestling and mixed martial arts at the same time, the greatness of the NCAA Div. I Wrestling Championships, and much more.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again speaks with unbeaten Strikeforce mixed martial arts fighter Tyron Woodley (http://www.tyronwoodley.com).
He will be headlining the Strikeforce Challengers mixed martial arts card on Friday, January 7, from the Nashville Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee. This card will be shown live on Showtime in the U.S., during their free preview weekend.
In the main event, Tyron Woodley (7-0) will fight Tarec Saffiedine (10-2) in a welterweight (170 pounds) fight.
We spoke Monday evening by phone with Tyron Woodley about what to expect in this fight. Although he was a two-time NCAA Div. I All-American wrestler and Big 12 champion at Missouri, he told us he is coming to fight. We discussed his training in striking and how he has adapted as a mixed martial arts fighter. And he explained where he believes he is in the quest for a Strikeforce welterweight title shot, and how he thinks he would do in fights with top welterweights in that organization.
As a former wrestler, he also discussed the role of wrestling in mixed martial arts and the problems in wrestling which are seeing so many wrestlers leaving that sport to enter mixed martial arts. We also discussed why, in the opinion of so many elite wrestlers who have fought at the top level of mixed martial arts, wrestling is actually a tougher sport than mixed martial arts for the athletes.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses the issues of why combat sports are needed, what type of combat sports are acceptable, how different societies have viewed combat sports through the ages, and how all this is relevant to the fight to legalize mixed martial arts in New York, and to preserve it in Japan where it has been severely declining.
Examined are some of the lessons from the Dynamite mixed martial arts and kickboxing card on December 31, 2010, at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan, as well as combat sports in ancient Greece and Africa. Discussed is the critical issue of the values combat sports should embrace, as raised in the 2004 essay "The Nature of the Game: The Olympic Legacy" by Dr. Michael B. Poliakoff (http://www.neh.gov/news/humanities/2004-07/natureofgame.html). We also discuss why we should support fighting sports, the views of George Will and George Orwell on combat sports, what might be the ideal form of combat sports, and much more.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses catch wrestling, also known as catch-as-catch-can wrestling, with Jake Shannon of ScientificWrestling.com (http://scientificwrestling.com).
Catch wrestling is a style of wrestling where, to put it simply, both pins and submissions can win a match. It is a style that was immensely popular early in the twentieth century, when professional wrestling was to a degree a legitimate sport, and was on a par in popularity in America with baseball and boxing.
After virtually going underground for decades, the popularity of mixed martial arts, jiu-jitsu, and various styles of grappling have helped revive interest in catch wrestling. Today Jake Shannon, among others, both writes about this discipline and helps train people in it.
We spoke with him by phone Friday night about the movement to revive catch wrestling, its storied if often cloudy history, and what would have to take place for it to make a comeback as a popular spectator sport. This is a fascinating topic with someone who has studied it thoroughly and currently practices and teaches this discipline, and thus provides important perspective for all the combat sports.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Kevin Jackson, the Olympic gold medalist and two-time world champion freestyle wrestler, who is completing his second season as head wrestling coach for the legendary Iowa State Cyclones (http://www.cyclones.com/SportSelect.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=10700&SPID=4248&SPSID=46632).
With their two national champions from last season having graduated and some other problems facing the team, the 2010-11 regular season has been somewhat of a disappointment for Iowa State. Nonetheless, as the postseason tournaments are about to start, they are ranked in team polls as high as number 11, and known as a team that historically peaks this time of year.
We thus spoke with Coach Jackson about the prospects for Iowa State at the 2011 Big 12 Wrestling Championships and the 2011 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.
The 2011 Big 12 Wrestling Championships take place Saturday, March 5, at Hilton Coliseum of the campus of Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. This event will be streamed live on Big12Sports.com, with the finals also being streamed on the FSN web site. For more information, go to http://www.big12sports.com.
The 2011 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships will take place from Thursday, March 17, through Saturday, March 19, at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. ESPN in the U.S. will televise the finals live, and the ESPN networks and web sites will provide coverage of all six sessions of this tournament. For more information, go to http://www.ncaa.com/championships/wrestling/d1.
Iowa State has the number one ranked wrestler at 174 pounds, senior Jon Reader, who is undefeated this season. We discussed his chances for winning a national title in his final college season, as well as some of the other Iowa State wrestlers Coach Jackson expects to be in contention for Big 12 and national titles. We also discussed the situation involving 14-year-old female high school wrestler Cassy Herkelman, who had a male opponent in Iowa's recent high school state tournament forfeit to her rather than wrestling a girl.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman presents interviews and commentary from the spectacular 2011 NCAA Div. I Wrestling Championships, held March 17-19 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
We have comments from the Outstanding Wrestler of this tournament, Anthony Robles, the 125-pound champion from Arizona State, who finished this season undefeated. Born without a right leg, his rise to the top in college wrestling is one of the most moving and important sports stories in the world. He said he now will focus on motivational speaking. We also have comments from Bubba Jenkins, the 157-pound champion, also from Arizona State, who won his finals match with a stunning pin of previously-unbeaten David Taylor, the freshman phenom from Penn State. Bubba Jenkins said that he now plans to fight professionally in mixed martial arts. We have comments from two of the wrestlers who also finished this season undefeated, 165-pound champion Jordan Burroughs of Nebraska and 174-pound champion Jon Reader of Iowa State. Both of these wrestlers plan to continue wrestling and will try to make the U.S. Olympic Team in freestyle wrestling. And we have comments from two coaches who were themselves Olympic gold medalists in freestyle wrestling, Kevin Jackson of Iowa State and Cael Sanderson of Penn State, which won the team title.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with the head grappling coach at the Xtreme Couture gym in Las Vegas, Neil Melanson.
Neil had served for seven years in the U.S. Navy and for five years as a Special Agent in the Federal Air Marshal Service, doing counter-terrorism work. His quest to become a mixed martial arts fighter was cut short after he lost sight in one eye due to suffering from Behcet 's disease. Now he trains both professional and amateur fighters and gym students in various styles of grappling, for both grappling competitions and mixed martial arts.
He has also become one of the growing number of devotees of catch wrestling, also known as catch-as-catch-can wrestling. In this style of wrestling, you can win by submission or pin. A century ago, catch wrestling was one of the most popular professional sports in America and the world.
Neil has trained under the legendary Gene LeBell, and now helps train MMA legend Randy Couture, including in catch wrestling and how it applies to mixed martial arts.
In our recent phone interview, we discussed many of the prominent styles of grappling, including Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and catch wrestling. We compared the techniques and methods of these great grappling disciplines, and discussed how they applied to mixed martial arts.
We also examined the relatively small but blossoming movement to revive catch wrestling. Could the establishment of a new infrastructure of tournaments and training centers for catch wrestling resuscitate it as both a competitive and spectator sport sometime in the future? Many people would like that to occur, but there is a long, long way to go until anything close to that happens. We thus discussed some of the things that could be done to expand the reach of this sport, the rules for catch wrestling, and more.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses the impact that the death of 28-year-old New York Rangers enforcer Derek Boogaard from still-unknown causes might have on combat sports. Boogaard had suffered numerous concussions from his hockey fights. His family is donating his brain to the Sports Legacy Institute at the Boston University School of Medicine to see if he had suffered from the brain disease CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy), which is caused by repeated head and brain trauma.
How this will affect combat sports like mixed martial arts and boxing, where inflicting head and brain trauma and causing concussions are keys to winning fights, remains to be seen. One possible scenario is that the popularity, exposure, and sponsorships of these sports will all fall dramatically at some point. That could open the door for safer combat sports which have much less head trauma, such as the various forms of grappling.
Grappling, however, is not on the program of the Olympic Games, the largest sporting event in the world. We thus discuss how one or more style of grappling might gain inclusion in the Olympics, the international structure of sports which the International Olympic committee uses as a feeder for the Olympics, the importance of events like the World Combat Games, how grappling in America is falling behind in the movement for Olympic inclusion, and much more.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Coach George Hero, the legendary coach and founder of the Midwood High School wrestling team in Brooklyn, New York, about his victory by pin at MidwoodMania II.
MidwoodMania II took place Saturday, April 30, at the Midwood High School Gymnasium in Brooklyn. In the main event, the 53-year-old Coach Hero pinned Adam Waxman, a 1987 graduate of Midwood, who was the first captain of the Midwood wrestling team, and is the owner of Fitness 1 Training in Brooklyn.
Right after his victory, we discussed with Coach Hero how he won this match and why he is continuing to wrestle. We also spoke with Adam Waxman, and we spoke with Jakub Pawlowski, a Midwood captain in 2007-08 who now wrestles for NYU, and who won his match at MidwoodMania II by decision. Why people become wrestlers for life and why wrestling is more than a sport but also a lifestyle were key themes of our discussion.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Dan Gable, Rulon Gardner, and Anthony Robles.
We spoke with each of them right before the U.S.-Russia dual freestyle wrestling meet in New York on May 5, 2011, in the Times Square area.
Dan Gable (http://www.dangable.com), the legendary Olympic gold medalist in freestyle wrestling and former coach who led the University of Iowa Hawkeyes to 15 NCAA Div. I titles, is retiring from his full-time position at Iowa. Now he will be working more on his own, and focusing on wrestling, both nationally and internationally. In our discussion, he emphasized the need for all wrestling organizations around the world to work together. He commented on changes which are needed in the current international wrestling rules, the lack of enough good college coaches in the U.S., and more.
Rulon Gardner (http://rulongardner.com), the Olympic gold medalist in Greco-Roman wrestling who defeated Alexander Karelin to win that gold medal in 2000, retired from competition after winning a bronze medal at the 2004 Olympics. Now, at age 39, he is considering the possibility of returning to the mat and making another medal run. We discussed with him about his style fitting in better with the current Greco rules, his desire to help the U.S. team whether wrestles or not, the satisfaction he has achieved from wrestling, and more.
Anthony Robles (http://choose2beunstoppable.com), born without a right leg, added to his amazing life story by wrestling four seasons for Arizona State, becoming a three-time All-American, and going undefeated in his senior year en route to winning the 2011 NCAA Div. I national championship at 125 pounds. He is now retired from competition and is beginning a career as a motivational speaker. His message is that everyone can be unstoppable in life. He explained that he will still be around wrestling, why it is a love of his life, and more.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again speaks with the legendary coach and founder of the Midwood High School wrestling team in Brooklyn, New York, George Hero.
The 53-year-old Coach Hero will once again take to the mat in this event, which is aimed at promoting and popularizing the sport of wrestling and the Midwood High School wrestling team. At MidwoodMania II, Coach Hero will take on Adam Waxman in a match under NCAA rules. Adam Waxman, a 1987 graduate of Midwood, was the first captain of the Midwood wrestling team. Since 1990, he has been the owner of Fitness 1 Training in Brooklyn, so we can expect him to offer stiff competition to his mentor and former coach.
There will also be a full card of matches in folkstyle, freestyle, and Greco-Roman wrestling. This year, not only are numerous Midwood alumni returning to the mat, but also many other alumni from schools in Brooklyn will be competing as well.
MidwoodMania II takes place Saturday, April 30, beginning at 11 AM ET, at the Midwood High School Gymnasium at 2839 Bedford Avenue in Brooklyn. There is a Facebook page with more information about MidwoodMania II at http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=183221558382474.
We spoke with Coach Hero on Tuesday about this event and what it means to the sport of wrestling and the combat sports in general.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with sports journalist Oksana Kehoe (http://oksanakehoe.com/).
Born in Russia and living in America for the past decade, Oksana has covered numerous sporting events, including boxing and mixed martial arts cards, as well as those of other sports, for both Russian and American media.
The rise of Russia and the countries of the former Soviet Union in recent years in the sporting world in general and the combat sports in particular has captured the attention of many people. We met on Monday evening in midtown Manhattan to discuss this phenomenon, as well as the decline of success of so many American athletes, especially in the combat sports. She also explained why she moved to America and how she got involved in sports media. This was just one of the first of what we hope will be many discussions on this topic, including with Oksana.

On this audio edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses the major grappling events which are taking place this summer. Events both big and small featuring wrestling, grappling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, judo, sambo, and sumo are mentioned. This calendar of events in the various styles of grappling culminates with the most important and prestigious grappling event of all, the ADCC 2011 Submission Fighting World Championships, which take place Saturday, September 24, and Sunday, September 25, at the Capital FM Arena in Nottingham, U. K.
In addition, we discuss the general critique of sports by George Orwell in his 1945 essay "The Sporting Spirit" (http://orwell.ru/library/articles/spirit/english/e_spirit). In it, Orwell argued that "sport is an unfailing cause of ill-will" and "international sporting contests lead to orgies of hatred". We disagree that these conclusions apply across the board to modern grappling events, but also stress the need for those involved in these events to emphasize their positive social values.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with wrestling legends Bobby Douglas (http://www.bobbydouglasbook.com) and Bruce Baumgartner (http://www.brucebaumgartner.com).
We spoke with each of them right before the U.S.-Russia dual freestyle wrestling meet in New York on May 5, 2011, in the Times Square area.
Among his numerous accomplishments, Bobby Douglas was the first African-American to make a U.S. Olympic wrestling team, and the first African-American U.S. Olympic wrestling coach. He also coached Arizona State to an NCAA Div. I title in 1988, and at Iowa State coached Cael Sanderson to his record-setting four undefeated seasons and four national titles. He also helped coach the U.S. team at this May 5 meet.
We spoke with Coach Douglas about his newly-released biography, "Bobby Douglas: Life and Legacy of an American Wrestling Legend", written by Craig Sesker, and its importance for wrestling. We discussed the many benefits of wrestling, some of the problems facing college wrestling, the importance of the Beat the Streets program for wrestling, the problems facing U.S. wrestling internationally including keeping wrestlers in the Olympic program, the need to tweak high school and college rules to make them closer to international rules, why American wrestlers are improperly prepared to wrestle at the Olympic level, and more.
Bruce Baumgartner is a four-time Olympic medalist in freestyle wrestling, having won two gold medals along with one silver and one bronze, all at heavyweight. He is currently the Director of Athletics at Edinboro University and on the board of USA Wrestling.
We discussed with him the problem of American wrestlers not staying with the Olympic program long enough, the need to adapt to international rules while maintaining the tradition of American folkstyle, the difficulties facing college wrestling, and more.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman reviews the U.S.-Russia freestyle wrestling dual meet held Thursday, May 5, outdoors in the Times Square area in New York, with wrestlers Henry Cejudo and Jordan Burroughs, Coach Zeke Jones, and media members Jason Bryant and Kristal Hart. The U.S. won this dual meet, five matches to two.
After taking a hiatus of almost three years from wrestling, 2008 Olympic gold medalist Henry Cejudo is back competing in freestyle wrestling. In this meet, he defeated junior world bronze medalist Rasul Mashezov of Russia, 2-0, 4-3, at 55 kg/121 pounds. We spoke with him after his match about his return to wrestling and his plans for the future.
Jordan Burroughs, who won his second NCAA Div. I national championship earlier this year and dominated his opponents in an undefeated season, also gained much notoriety by winning the Hodge Trophy as the best college wrestler in the U.S. Now that he has completed his college career at Nebraska, he is focusing full-time on freestyle wrestling. At this dual meet, for the first time he faced a wrestler from Russia, Aniuar Geduev, and prevailed, 1-0, 2-1. He also is wrestling at 74 kg/163 pounds, which is actually two pounds lighter than he did in college. We spoke with Jordan Burroughs after his match to discuss his transition from folkstyle to freestyle wrestling and his plans.
In addition, we spoke right after this meet with U.S. National Freestyle Coach Zeke Jones about how the American wrestlers performed and what they need to do to improve their wrestling. And we spoke with Jason Bryant of USA Wrestling and Kristal Hart of the Kristal Hart Show on Manhattan Neighborhood Network about this meet and the entire experience of this event, which was held as part of the Beat the Streets Gala and fundraising effort.

On this audio edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses the main lessons of the three main combat sports shows televised this weekend in the U.S.
The best of the three was the M-1 Challenge XXVI mixed martial arts card, which took place Friday, July 8, at The Hangar in Costa Mesa, California, and was telecast live on Showtime. In the main event, heavyweight M-1 contender Kenny "Deuce" Garner won by a second-round KO over Pat Bennett. In the co-main event of this card, which had five fights televised, Arthur Guseinov knocked out Tyson Jeffries with a picture-perfect spinning back fist in the first round of their middleweight fight.
The next best show was also on Showtime, but featured boxing. On Saturday, July 9, from Carson, California, Brandon Rios retained his WBA lightweight title with a third-round stoppage of Urbano Antillon in an all-out battle. Also, Carlos Molina upset Kermit Cintron, winning a clear-cut, 10-round unanimous decision in their junior middleweight bout.
The biggest disgrace occurred on the HBO-televised boxing card from Atlantic City, New Jersey, also on July 9. Junior middleweight Paul Williams was given a majority decision victory over Erislandy Lara in a fight which virtually no one except two of the judges thought Williams had won.
We thus discuss the significance of these three shows. We also comment on some recent developments in grappling, including plans for the 2011 ADCC Submission Fighting World Championships, which take place September 24-25 in Nottingham, England, and the attempts to revive catch-as-catch-can wrestling as a real sport.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman explodes more myths about the combat sports. Discussed and analyzed are the almost-universally panned Pacquiao-Mosley mismatch, why Floyd Mayweather Jr. is sitting at home, the issue of the fight against doping in boxing and MMA, the real reasons why MMA is still illegal in New York, the self-destructive insularity of the American sports establishment, the never-ending failure to promote and market wrestling properly, and much more.

On this audio edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman reviews the impressive twelfth-round TKO victory by Saul "Canelo" Alvarez over Ryan Rhodes, and the highly unimpressive Strikeforce card, which both took place Saturday, June 18.
The brightest spot for the Strikeforce card was the use of catch wrestling by Josh Barnett in his second-round submission victory over Brett Rogers. Could catch wrestling, with victory by pin or submission, and the style used when professional wrestling was to a degree a real sport in the early twentieth century, make a comeback? We ask that question, but others will have to provide the answer.

On this audio edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with journalist and All-American wrestler Tim (T.R.) Foley about his journey through China and Mongolia to report on various traditional and indigenous styles of wrestling. He is documenting his findings on his web site, Wrestling Roots (http://wrestlingroots.org).
We spoke with him by Skype on Sunday morning (Saturday night in the U.S.) while he was in Shanghai and on his way to a town in Shanxi Province which he says is known as the "wrestling village" of China. He will be spending 10 to 12 more weeks in Asia before returning to the U.S. and writing a book about his travels.
We open this show with commentary on some of the latest doings in boxing and mixed martial arts, continuing topics discussed on previous shows. We discuss the majority decision victory by Carl Froch over Glen Johnson on June 4 in the Super Six World Boxing Classic semifinal fight in Atlantic City, the overall success of this tournament, and the upcoming Boricua Invasion boxing cards at Roseland Ballroom in New York on June 10 and 11.
Turning to MMA, we discuss the dilemma faced by Showtime when their current contract with Strikeforce runs out, the need for them to organize some type of World MMA Classic similar to the World Boxing Classic, and the controversies involving more mindless behavior by fighters and so-called "media". More importantly, we discuss the frightening news that UFC fighter Brian Foster has reportedly been "cleared by doctors to train and compete again" despite having recently had bleeding on his brain.
With boxing and MMA beset by problems, the door is opening for various styles of grappling and wrestling to advance as spectator sports. We thus discuss how these combat sports could take advantage of this situation.
