No Holds Barred: Larry Nugent and the Marketing of Wrestling
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Larry Nugent, the Director of Development of USA Wrestling (http://themat.com).
For the second year in a row, USA Wrestling has received a special marketing award from the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) for the most unique and creative National Governing Body marketing initiatives for the year. This award recognized the success of the 2009 Night of Champions, held November 9, 2009, in Bernardsville, New Jersey, and organized by USA Wrestling (http://themat.com/section.php?section_id=3&page=showarticle&ArticleID=21294).
We sat down with Larry Nugent in New York Wednesday afternoon to discuss the marketing of wrestling and what challenges are still faced in continuing to popularize the world's oldest sport.
Also, the day after our discussion, USA Wrestling announced the launching of a new social network devoted to wrestling, called USA Wrestling Nation (http://www.usawrestlingnation.com). It is free and easy to join, and all those interested in wrestling are encouraged to join.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman and Gary Abbott, the Director of Communications of USA Wrestling, preview the 2010 World Wrestling Championships.
This event takes place Monday, September 6, through Sunday, September 12, at the Sports Centre Olimpiskiy in Moscow, Russia.
USA Wrestling has a special section on the World Championships on TheMat.com (http://www.themat.com/specialevents/2010/worlds/default.php?EventID=23959).
Our interview previewed this event by focusing upon many of the top and champion wrestlers from around the world in the three styles which will be contested: men's and women's freestyle wrestling, and Greco-Roman wrestling. We discussed the U.S. entries this year, and their chances of winning medals against the international competition.
We also discussed the significance of this event being held in Russia this year, the always-controversial rules of wrestling, the annual predictions of international wrestling journalists of gold medal winners (including both of us), how to follow this event live, and more.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with mixed martial arts fighter and former wrestler Kenny "Deuce" Garner, who will fight in the heavyweight finals of the M-1 Global Americas Selection tournament Saturday, September 18, 2010, at Bally's Casino Hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey. His opponent will be Pat Bennett, who had been a two-time Div. 3 All-American wrestler at SUNY-Brockport. We spoke with the colorful Kenny Garner by phone to get his view on how this fight, which is expected to feature a lot of action, will go.
We open the show by discussing some of the lessons from the recently-concluded World Championships of Wrestling, which took place September 6-12 in Moscow. This was one of the most exciting world championships in recent memory, and also saw the wrestlers using some amazing techniques, but this event got little attention outside the wrestling community. We explain some of the reasons why, and offer some suggestions.
In addition, we squarely address the myth that wrestling is a "boring" sport. While some wrestlers may wrestle a boring style, the philosophy behind the sport emphasizes seeking dominance. We comment on this issue both regarding wrestling as a sport, and wrestling and wrestlers in mixed martial arts, borrowing some advice from wrestling legend Dan Gable.

No Holds Barred: George Hero, Midwood Wrestling Exhibition 2010, MMA, and Pindar the Poet of Ancient Greece
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again speaks with the legendary coach and founder of the Midwood High School wrestling team in Brooklyn, New York, George Hero.
Coach Hero will be one of the many current and former Midwood wrestlers, alumni, and coaches who will be competing at the Midwood Wrestling Exhibition 2010, this Saturday, October 16, beginning at noon, at the Midwood High School Gymnasium at 2839 Bedford Avenue in Brooklyn. This event will feature folkstyle, freestyle, and Greco-Roman wrestling. Coach Hero will be facing heavyweight Yuriy Petriv in the main event in a match held under NCAA rules, and with special guest referee Bob Backlund, a 1971 NCAA Div. II national champion at North Dakota State University before going into the WWWF.
There is a Facebook page with more information on this event here: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=137078449650607.
We had an enlightening and wide-ranging discussion Tuesday night with Coach Hero about the importance of this event, wrestling, and the combat sports in general. We discussed how these combat sports greatly benefit both the mind and body, and build positive values, which is especially important now in a culture which emphasizes so much negativity. We refuted many of the claims of the critics of mixed martial arts in New York, where the politicians are still keeping this sport illegal. We noted the many ways wrestling and mixed martial arts are very closely linked. And he discussed how Midwood Wrestling and the Beat The Streets organization are bringing many youths into wrestling programs for the first time.
Coach Hero also stated, "We have to go back to the ancient Greek ideals about athletics." He recommends to his athletes that they study the writings of Pindar, the great lyric poet of ancient Greece, whose writings include commentary on the Olympics and other athletic events of his era. So we read an excerpt from Pindar, and encouraged others to learn from this classic poet as well.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Kevin Jackson, the Olympic gold medalist and two-time world champion freestyle wrestler, who is starting his second season as head wrestling coach for the legendary Iowa State Cyclones (http://www.cyclones.com/SportSelect.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=10700&KEY=&SPID=4248&SPSID=46632).
The 2010-2011 college wrestling season for the Cyclones officially starts this Saturday, November 6, with dual meets against Virginia Tech and Kent State in Salem, Virginia. On Sunday, November 7, the Hokie Open takes place, also in Salem, Virginia. The highly-anticipated annual showdown between Iowa State and the defending NCAA Div. I national champions, the Iowa Hawkeyes, takes place Friday, December 3, at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa.
We spoke at length with Coach Jackson about what to expect this season, especially with the graduation of their two 2009-2010 national champions, Jake Varner and David Zabriskie. He explained the status of Andrew Long, who was a 2009-2010 runner-up as a freshman at 125 pounds, and who is not on the Cyclone roster at this time. We discussed who are expected to be the leaders on the Cyclone team this year, and which wrestlers are the likely starters, including two-time All-American Jon Reader. He also stated that witnessing live an Iowa State-Iowa wrestling dual meet is one of the greatest experiences a sports fan could ever have, and much more.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with mixed martial arts heavyweight fighter Josh Barnett.
He will be competing in the Strikeforce World Grand Prix Heavyweight Tournament in a quarterfinal fight against Brett Rogers at a date and location to be announced.
Barnett is the most controversial fighter in this tournament, since he currently is not licensed to fight in North America. He tested positive for an anabolic steroid prior to a planned August 2009 fight with Fedor Emelianenko, and was thus denied a license by the California State Athletic Commission. This was his second official positive drug test, plus one test run of drug-testing in 2001. (Barnett denies ever taking steroids.) He next fought in Japan and Australia in 2010, where the requirements and standards for allowing fighters to compete are lower than in North America. But he is still regarded as one of the top heavyweights in the world.
He also has been playing cat-and-mouse with the California commission at several hearings which were supposed to have addressed his status. His case is still unresolved following the failure of both him and his legal representation to show up at these hearings at the same time.
Yet there are indications that other commissions may indeed grant him a license if he tests clean in whatever drug-testing they or Strikeforce may conduct. He would then be legally entitled to fight in those jurisdictions.
While Barnett may be able to take advantage of the weak drug-testing by these athletic commissions and lack of any central authority in the combat sport to conduct such drug-testing, his playing the system once again highlights the need for the adoption of the protocols of the World Anti-Doping Agency in the combat sports and by all these athletic commissions. But it also would be wrong to focus mainly on the shortcomings of this one fighter, since it is the very flawed system which is in place which has allowed this situation to exist.
In light of all this, we spoke with Josh Barnett on January 10 when he was in New York for a Showtime and Strikeforce photo and promo shoot. We did ask him about his license situation, but mainly focused on his upcoming fight and related issues. We discussed the importance of this tournament, his fight with Brett Rogers, the issues of the role of grappling and striking in mixed martial arts, and his coaching of fighter Megumi Fujii and her recent loss to Zoila Frausto. We also focused on the role of catch wrestling, its future as a sport and discipline, why a wrestling base is so important for competing in mixed martial arts, why catch wrestling is so important as well, and more.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again speaks with Dr. Margaret Goodman, a neurologist, the former chair of the Medical Advisory Board of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, and the medical correspondent for No Holds Barred.
The world of combat sports is a world of constant controversy, and we discuss some of the latest ones. The February 19 bantamweight title fight between Nonito Donaire and Fernando Montiel, won by a brutal second-round TKO by Donaire, has many questioning why the referee let the fight proceed after Montiel was knocked down and was quivering on the canvas. Some have also claimed that this proves that mixed martial arts is safer than boxing. We discuss that also, at a time when the safety dangers to fighters in both sports seem to be leveling out. We also discuss the current role of the controversial Victor Conte, infamous as a doping mastermind in the BALCO scandal, as a trainer for Donaire, and whether or not he can now be trusted.
In addition, we discuss the tragic suicide of former Chicago Bears player Dave Duerson, who asked that his brain be studied by researchers investigating the brain disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), to see if he had suffered brain damage. Duerson had also been part of an NFL panel considering the disability claims of retired players, including those related to brain damage and dementia.
We also try to look into the future and determine what all this might mean for the combat sports, how the battle against doping must be stepped up, what must be done to prevent the current budget crises faced by state governments in the U.S. from destroying proper regulation of the combat sports, and more.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with mixed martial arts legend Pat Miletich.
The first fighter to hold the UFC 170-pound title and the creator of one of the most influential schools of fighting, Pat Miletich, though not officially retired as a fighter, can now be seen as an announcer for Strikeforce on their telecasts on Showtime.
We spoke with him by phone on Tuesday night about a number of hot topics in mixed martial arts. We discussed the importance of the upcoming Strikeforce World Grand Prix Heavyweight Tournament, the ongoing battle to legalize mixed martial arts in New York, some of the highlights of his legendary fighting career, and the influence of his style on all of mixed martial arts, where he emphasized fighters developing a well-rounded set of techniques. He elaborated on the comments he had made on the January 7 Strikeforce Challengers telecast, including his praise of the athletic abilities of rising star Tyron Woodley. We also discussed announcing and his good relationship with his fellow Strikeforce announcers, the negativity that pervades much of what calls itself the mixed martial arts media, a little bit about wrestling (especially since Pat is from Iowa), and much more.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker about the Strikeforce World Grand Prix Heavyweight Tournament.
We spoke in New York on Monday about this historic tournament, which includes many of the top mixed martial arts heavyweights in the world. We discussed the structure of the tournament, the negotiations between Strikeforce and M-1 Global to re-sign Fedor Emelianenko and have him fight in this tournament, why getting Fedor was "well worth the wait," the licensing situation involving Josh Barnett who is also in this tournament, and more.
In addition, we discussed the efforts to re-legalize mixed martial arts in New York, and the February 8 rally called by the Coalition to Legalize Mixed Martial Arts in New York (http://nymmanow.blogspot.com). "We'll definitely have a voice there," said Scott Coker.
We also read a comment from Nick Lembo of the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board about the issue of the length of rounds in this tournament. Many people would like all fights in it, regardless of whether they are for the Strikeforce heavyweight title or not, to be scheduled for five rounds. The tournament starts on February 12 at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey, and will be shown live in the U.S. on Showtime.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with two-time U.S. Olympic freestyle wrestler and unbeaten mixed martial arts fighter Daniel Cormier (http://twitter.com/Cormier2010).
On Friday, January 7, at the Strikeforce Challengers mixed martial arts card in Nashville, Tennessee, and shown live in the U.S. on Showtime, he notched his seventh consecutive victory with a dominating unanimous decision over Devin Cole.
We spoke with Daniel Cormier by phone on Sunday about his latest victory and his plans in mixed martial arts. We discussed the technique he used in this fight, including his improved striking. Topics included how he has advanced as a fighter since his pro debut in September 2009, the possibility of him competing as an alternate in the upcoming Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix, whether or not he will stay at heavyweight, his training at American Kickboxing Academy with fighters such as former wrestler and current UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez, the difficulties of trying to compete in wrestling and mixed martial arts at the same time, the greatness of the NCAA Div. I Wrestling Championships, and much more.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again speaks with unbeaten Strikeforce mixed martial arts fighter Tyron Woodley (http://www.tyronwoodley.com).
He will be headlining the Strikeforce Challengers mixed martial arts card on Friday, January 7, from the Nashville Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee. This card will be shown live on Showtime in the U.S., during their free preview weekend.
In the main event, Tyron Woodley (7-0) will fight Tarec Saffiedine (10-2) in a welterweight (170 pounds) fight.
We spoke Monday evening by phone with Tyron Woodley about what to expect in this fight. Although he was a two-time NCAA Div. I All-American wrestler and Big 12 champion at Missouri, he told us he is coming to fight. We discussed his training in striking and how he has adapted as a mixed martial arts fighter. And he explained where he believes he is in the quest for a Strikeforce welterweight title shot, and how he thinks he would do in fights with top welterweights in that organization.
As a former wrestler, he also discussed the role of wrestling in mixed martial arts and the problems in wrestling which are seeing so many wrestlers leaving that sport to enter mixed martial arts. We also discussed why, in the opinion of so many elite wrestlers who have fought at the top level of mixed martial arts, wrestling is actually a tougher sport than mixed martial arts for the athletes.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses the issues of why combat sports are needed, what type of combat sports are acceptable, how different societies have viewed combat sports through the ages, and how all this is relevant to the fight to legalize mixed martial arts in New York, and to preserve it in Japan where it has been severely declining.
Examined are some of the lessons from the Dynamite mixed martial arts and kickboxing card on December 31, 2010, at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan, as well as combat sports in ancient Greece and Africa. Discussed is the critical issue of the values combat sports should embrace, as raised in the 2004 essay "The Nature of the Game: The Olympic Legacy" by Dr. Michael B. Poliakoff (http://www.neh.gov/news/humanities/2004-07/natureofgame.html). We also discuss why we should support fighting sports, the views of George Will and George Orwell on combat sports, what might be the ideal form of combat sports, and much more.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Donovan Craig, the editor-in-chief of Fight! Magazine (http://www.fightmagazine.com).
Our main discussion focused upon the upcoming Strikeforce World Grand Prix Heavyweight Tournament, which begins February 12 at the IZOD Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey, and will be shown live in the U.S. on Showtime.
We began our discussion by reviewing the previous records of the fighters in this tournament against each other. Seven of the eight have previously faced other fighters in it, with each having already faced more than one of the tournament fighters. Every one of these seven fighters has at least one win and at least one loss against the tournament fighters they have already fought.
Besides discussing the brackets, the historical importance of this tournament, and how we see it going, we delved into numerous other topics. Among those we talked about were the cultural and political reasons why MMA is still not legal in New York, the role of movies and fiction in combat sports, the significance of and lessons from the Ali-Frazier trilogy and rivalry for MMA, the Jacob Volkmann-Obama situation, the omission of MMA by a recent Harris Poll on their survey about favorite sports, the actual position of M-1 Global on drug-testing and this tournament, and much more.
In addition, an online petition has just been started for Strikeforce to get the legendary Lenne Hardt as a ring announcer for this tournament. You can sign it here: http://ironforgesiron.com/2011/01/lenne-hardt-strikeforce-petition.

We spoke with her Tuesday by phone about some of the recent MMA events she has covered, the media and the role of women, and women fighters in MMA. She covered the Fight Time Promotions card on Friday, February 18, in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, where she said the fight between Caleb Archer and Aaron Cerda, won by Archer by unanimous decision, was the best fight she has seen live this year.
She also will be covering the 2011 South Florida Fight Expo, which runs Thursday, February 24, through Sunday, February 27, in Miami, Florida, and performing with her band there. Besides numerous exhibits, this event will feature competition in various forms of combat sports, including MMA, boxing, and Muay Thai.
Then on Saturday, March 5, she heads north to cover the Raging Wolf MMA event at the Seneca Niagara Hotel and Casino Event Center in the Seneca Nation in Niagara Falls, New York.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses this historic week for mixed martial arts in New York, including the February 8 rally called by the Coalition to Legalize Mixed Martial Arts in New York (http://nymmanow.blogspot.com), and the build-up for the opening round bouts of the Strikeforce World Grand Prix Heavyweight Tournament, which takes place Saturday, February 12, at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
We begin with the speech at the February 8 rally by Coalition co-founder Eddie Goldman, explaining the positive social values which mixed martial arts can have to benefit the people, as well as a brief look at the history of the struggle to legalize MMA and its lessons for New York.
At the rally, we spoke with Alistair Overeem, who holds both the Strikeforce and Dream heavyweight titles as well as the K-1 World Grand Prix 2010 title, and who came to support the rally. We also spoke with the top women's 125-pound MMA fighter in the world today, Tara LaRosa, who also spoke at the rally.
At the February 9 prefight news conference for the Strikeforce World Grand Prix Heavyweight Tournament in New York, we spoke again with Alistair Overeem, this time more about the tournament itself. Overeem is considered by many to be one of the favorites to win this tournament, as is the former linear and Pride heavyweight champion, Fedor Emelianenko.
We also had a chance to ask a few questions directly of Fedor right after the formal news conference. Fedor fights in the main event on that February 12 card against Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva. This card will be televised live in the U.S. on Showtime.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman presents the entire audio from the historic roundtable meeting called by the Coalition to Legalize Mixed Martial Arts in New York (http://nymmanow.blogspot.com) to discuss strategy and tactics in the grassroots fight to re-legalize the sport of MMA in New York. The roundtable meeting was held Thursday, February 3, at New York Combat Sambo.
The participants were:
1) Assemblyman Dean Murray (R,C-East Patchogue): Ranking Minority member of the New York State Assembly Committee on Tourism, Parks, Arts and Sports Development.
2) Kevin Malloy: Assemblyman Murray's Chief of Staff.
3) Kevin Morello: Office of Senator Lee Zeldin (R, C, I - Long Island). Co sponsor of the Senate MMA bill.
4) Justin Klein: Member of the NY Bar Sports Law Committee and writer for MMA Payout.
5) Peter Lampasona: MMA journalist, US Combat Sport and host of Cage Radio.
6) Jim Genia: MMA journalist, Editor at Full Contact Fighter.
7) Eddie Goldman: MMA journalist, No Holds Barred.
8) Bruce Kivo: MMA journalist, MMA Confidential.
9) Steve Katz: Queens gym owner/amateur MMA promoter.
10) Steve Kardian: Westchester gym owner, security expert, and national media consultant.
11) Stephen Koepfer: Manhattan gym owner, President of the American Sambo Association.
12) Paula Romero: MMA insider.
13) Kahleem Poole: MMA documentarian.
This meeting revealed some very good news for mixed martial arts. Just days ago, there was what appeared to be disastrous news for the sport. Not only did the newly-elected Governor Andrew Cuomo not include re-legalizing MMA in his 2011-12 budget proposal, but he also called for eliminating the salary of the chair of the New York State Athletic Commission. That would effectively gut the ability of the commission to protect properly the health and safety of all combat sports athletes, and prevent it from having enough staff to regulate the rapidly-growing sport of MMA.
The good news came from Assemblyman Murray. In past years, re-legalizing MMA has been approved in the State Senate but not the Assembly. Now, as the ranking minority member of the New York State Assembly Committee on Tourism, Parks, Arts and Sports Development, he is working with his Democratic colleague and committee chair, Steve Englebright, to mobilize bi-partisan support for passage of such pro-MMA legislation.
"I'm very confident," said Assemblyman Murray at the roundtable. "I'm more confident than I've been in years." Both Assemblymen Englebright and Murray believe that if the bill to re-legalize MMA were put to a vote in the Assembly, with support from many members of both political parties, it would achieve a majority and pass in the Assembly. Passage in the Senate and then signature by Governor Cuomo would also be required for the bill to become a law, but again, it has been in the Assembly where it has been held up in the past.
Still, grassroots action is needed to get MMA re-legalized in New York. That is why the Coalition to Legalize Mixed Martial Arts in New York will have a rally on Tuesday, February 8, at 250 Broadway in lower Manhattan, across the street from City Hall and outside the district office of Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, beginning at 12 noon.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Strikeforce heavyweight fighter Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva, who will be facing Fedor Emelianenko on Saturday, February 12, at the IZOD Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey, in the opening round of the Strikeforce World Grand Prix Heavyweight Tournament. We spoke with him on January 10 when he was in New York as part of a photo and video shoot for Strikeforce and Showtime, which will be telecasting this tournament in the U.S.
We also review some of the history about the situation in New York when mixed martial arts was first legalized and then made illegal in 1997, and show why its banning was not done to ensure fighter safety.
There will be a rally on Tuesday, February 8, in New York City to support legalizing and regulating mixed martial arts in New York. More information can be found on the site of the sponsor of the rally, the Coalition to Legalize Mixed Martial Arts in New York, at http://nymmanow.blogspot.com.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again speaks with the owner and president of the Maximum Fighting Championship (MFC), Mark Pavelich.
Their next show will be MFC 28: Supremacy on Friday, February 25, at the River Cree Resort and Casino, just outside Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The main card will air live throughout North America on HDNet Fights.
In the main event, MFC veterans Ryan Jimmo and Dwayne Lewis will fight for the MFC light heavyweight title. In a lightweight bout, a rejuvenated Drew Fickett will face Matt Veach, who is replacing the injured Antonio McKee.
Our discussion with Mark Pavelich started off focusing on this card and branched out to examine the progress of MFC as an organization. MFC will very shortly be announcing their expansion into the province of Ontario, where mixed martial arts has only recently been allowed and sanctioned, and their plans to run numerous shows there. We also discussed that the athletic commission in Ontario is only permitting MMA fights in a cage and not a ring. MFC has thus far used a ring, and we discussed the issues related to that, as well as much more.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses catch wrestling, also known as catch-as-catch-can wrestling, with Jake Shannon of ScientificWrestling.com (http://scientificwrestling.com).
Catch wrestling is a style of wrestling where, to put it simply, both pins and submissions can win a match. It is a style that was immensely popular early in the twentieth century, when professional wrestling was to a degree a legitimate sport, and was on a par in popularity in America with baseball and boxing.
After virtually going underground for decades, the popularity of mixed martial arts, jiu-jitsu, and various styles of grappling have helped revive interest in catch wrestling. Today Jake Shannon, among others, both writes about this discipline and helps train people in it.
We spoke with him by phone Friday night about the movement to revive catch wrestling, its storied if often cloudy history, and what would have to take place for it to make a comeback as a popular spectator sport. This is a fascinating topic with someone who has studied it thoroughly and currently practices and teaches this discipline, and thus provides important perspective for all the combat sports.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses the historic victory by Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva over Fedor Emelianenko in their opening round fight of the Strikeforce World Grand Prix Heavyweight Tournament, which took place Saturday, February 12, at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey. After a dominating second round by Bigfoot, the fight was stopped by the ringside physician due to damage to the right eye of Fedor.
After the fight, we got some comments from the victor, Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva. We also have the part of the postfight news conference where Vadim Finkelchtein and Evgeni Kogan of M-1 Global along with Scott Coker of Strikeforce discuss the loss by Fedor and his future. And we have Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva speaking and answering questions at this news conference as well.
Also, we open with a no holds barred commentary on some of the key lessons of this fight and what they mean for mixed martial arts and the combat sports. We discuss the continuing importance to MMA of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the unparalleled greatness of the MMA career of Fedor Emelianenko, the effect of Bigfoot's upset of Fedor on the sport of MMA and this heavyweight tournament, important blunders that were made in organizing the event in New Jersey, and much more.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses the Fernando Montiel-Nonito Donaire bantamweight title fight coming up Saturday, February 19, as well as the March 5 Saul Alvarez-Matthew Hatton and May 7 Manny Pacquiao-Shane Mosley fights.
While a fight like Montiel-Donaire will likely provide excitement in the ring, the stench of the self-destructive politics of boxing is so pervasive that it is hard to enjoy much of anything these days in this declining business. We discuss the collapse of the boxing reform movement, and how the clock of doom is ticking for what is left of boxing.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman previews an incredible week coming up in the combat sports, as well as a conference which may mark a major step in the battle against corruption in world sports.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will be holding a Working Meeting on irregular and illegal sports betting on Tuesday, March 1, at the IOC Headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland. This coincides with a number of major calls for the formation of some type of independent world agency to combat corruption in sports and fight for their integrity. Such statements have already been publicly issued by Tamas Ajan of Hungary, who is an honorary member of the IOC and president of International Weightlifting Federation, and David Howman, the director general of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Many IOC officials are believed to be unenthusiastic about the formation of such a body, and we will be following the developments at this meeting and afterwards, including the activities of Play the Game (http://www.playthegame.org), which has long supported the establishment of such an anti-corruption agency.
In mixed martial arts, the main attraction this coming weekend will be the first title defense by Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante against MMA veteran and legend Dan Henderson. That headlines a card on Saturday, March 5, at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, which will be shown live in the U.S. on Showtime. We spoke with both Feijao and Dan Henderson about what to expect in this fight on a media conference call, and also preview the women's 135-pound title fight between champion Marloes Coenen and challenger Liz Carmouche.
Also on Saturday, March 5, M-1 Challenge XXIII features two title fights and a loaded card from the Crocus City Arena in Moscow, Russia. This card will be webcast live and for free on the M-1 Global web site (http://www.M-1Global.com) starting at 11:00 am EST / 8:00am PST in North America. In a heavyweight title fight, Guram Gugenishvili, the M-1 Challenge champion, fights Maxim Grishin, the M-1 Selection Eastern Europe 2010 champion. In a welterweight title fight, Shamil Zavurov, the M-1 Challenge C\champion, faces Tom Gallicchio, the M-1 Selection Americas 2010 champion.
We also discuss the west coast trials for the World Professional Jiu Jitsu Cup, which take place March 5 and 6 in San Diego, California; the Saul "Canelo" Alvarez-Matthew Hatton WBC 154-pound title fight on March 5 from Anaheim, California, which will shown in the U.S. on HBO; and the NCAA Division I wrestling conference championships, which also take place this coming weekend.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Andre Berto and Victor Ortiz about their fight coming up on Saturday, April 16, and recaps the surprisingly delightful and brutal battle between Marcos Maidana and Erik Morales on April 9.
Many observers expected a one-sided affair, and even a brutal beatdown, when slugger Marcos Maidana took on the aging but classical Mexican veteran Erik Morales in a junior welterweight fight on April 9 in Las Vegas. But as their battle ensued, it not only proved to be highly competitive, but riveting and dramatic as it advanced from round to round. With his right eye cut in the first round and then swollen shut, Morales managed to fight on and stay in the fight until almost the end. While Maidana, now 30-2 with 27 KOs, won a majority decision over Morales, now 51-7 with 35 KOs, this war was a genuine fight of the year candidate. We analyze the context of this fight, how it looked going in like another example of the kinds of fights which have stripped boxing of any credibility, and how it ended up becoming one of the most compelling if brutal fights of recent memory. And we compare it to the main events on the major mixed martial arts cards this past weekend.
This coming Saturday, April 16, there is yet another fight which could turn out to be a surprise to the skeptics and cynics, who are usually correct in their (and our) assessments of professional boxing. Unbeaten WBC welterweight Andre Berto (27-0. 21 KOs) will fight Victor Ortiz (28-2-2, 22 KOs), who is moving up from the junior welterweight division. This fight will take place at the MGM Grand Theater at Foxwoods in Mashantucket, Connecticut, and be shown live in the U.S. on HBO.
While Berto is the favorite, Ortiz, who once was touted by his promoters, Golden Boy Promotions, as the next big thing, is not happy with being viewed as an opponent. His loss to Maidana and draw with Lamont Peterson have removed him from consideration as an elite fighter, and that may serve as motivation for him to attempt to make a statement in what some consider a showcase fight for Berto. But Berto is highly confident as well, which may make for another week of a surprisingly competitive and thrilling main event in the major card in boxing.
We spoke with both Andre Berto and Victor Ortiz at the kickoff news conference for this fight in New York. We also spoke with Kristal Hart, who hosts The Kristal Hart Show in New York on Manhattan Neighborhood Network, about what to expect in this fight.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with one of the top welterweight mixed martial arts fighters in the world, Jay Hieron (http://www.jayhieron.com/).
Fighting out of Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas, Jay Hieron has recently signed with the Bellator Fighting Championships and will make his debut with them this Saturday, March 5, at Bellator 35 from the Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino in Lemoore, California. He will face Anthony Lapsley in a quarterfinal fight in the Bellator season 4 welterweight tournament. This card will be televised live in the U.S. on MTV2 beginning at 9pm ET/PT (tape-delayed on West Coast), with a Spanish-language telecast airing on MTV Tr3s on Sunday, March 6, at 8pm ET/PT.
Although several of the promotions in which he has fought have had difficulties, Jay Hieron remains one of the most talented fighters in mixed martial arts. He was the reigning IFL welterweight champion when that promotion folded, and has an overall record of 19-4. He has won his last seven fights and not lost a fight since 2007. He went 2-0 in Strikeforce before parting ways with them, and now hopes to win the Bellator welterweight tournament, thus guaranteeing him a title shot, free of politics and the rest.
We spoke with Jay Hieron by phone Tuesday night about his upcoming fight, some of the lessons of his career in both wrestling and MMA, and his plans. Despite a layoff of over a year, he still considers himself a top ten fighter, and aims to prove it on March 5.
The Bellator welterweight tournament in packed with talent. The other quarterfinal fights on this card, which will also be televised, are Rick Hawn vs. Jim Wallhead, Chris Lozano vs. Lyman Good, and Brent Weedman vs. Dan Hornbuckle.
The return to action of Jay Hieron takes place on a very busy weekend for the combat sports, but make sure not to miss his fight and the intriguing Bellator welterweight tournament.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman presents the audio from the news conference held Tuesday, March 1, 2011, by Jacques Rogge, the president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), announcing the formation of a task force to address the issue of how "to fight irregular and illegal sport betting". This news conference was held at the headquarters of the IOC in Lausanne, Switzerland.
We also comment on some of the problems with the plans for such a task force, including seeing the regulated gambling industry as an ally in the battle against corruption in sports, and how this would be a step backwards for many major professional sports. And we discuss how various forms of corruption have hurt the combat sports over the years, and the continuing need for the establishment of an independent world sports anti-corruption agency.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Kevin Jackson, the Olympic gold medalist and two-time world champion freestyle wrestler, who is completing his second season as head wrestling coach for the legendary Iowa State Cyclones (http://www.cyclones.com/SportSelect.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=10700&SPID=4248&SPSID=46632).
With their two national champions from last season having graduated and some other problems facing the team, the 2010-11 regular season has been somewhat of a disappointment for Iowa State. Nonetheless, as the postseason tournaments are about to start, they are ranked in team polls as high as number 11, and known as a team that historically peaks this time of year.
We thus spoke with Coach Jackson about the prospects for Iowa State at the 2011 Big 12 Wrestling Championships and the 2011 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.
The 2011 Big 12 Wrestling Championships take place Saturday, March 5, at Hilton Coliseum of the campus of Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. This event will be streamed live on Big12Sports.com, with the finals also being streamed on the FSN web site. For more information, go to http://www.big12sports.com.
The 2011 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships will take place from Thursday, March 17, through Saturday, March 19, at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. ESPN in the U.S. will televise the finals live, and the ESPN networks and web sites will provide coverage of all six sessions of this tournament. For more information, go to http://www.ncaa.com/championships/wrestling/d1.
Iowa State has the number one ranked wrestler at 174 pounds, senior Jon Reader, who is undefeated this season. We discussed his chances for winning a national title in his final college season, as well as some of the other Iowa State wrestlers Coach Jackson expects to be in contention for Big 12 and national titles. We also discussed the situation involving 14-year-old female high school wrestler Cassy Herkelman, who had a male opponent in Iowa's recent high school state tournament forfeit to her rather than wrestling a girl.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Randall Yogachandra, the CEO of I SEE Entertainment (http://www.isee.ae), which is the promoter and owner of the mixed martial arts promotion, the Abu Dhabi Fighting Championship (ADFC) (http://adfc.ae). We also briefly review the Strikeforce, Bellator, and HBO Boxing cards.
The ADFC will be having their third event Friday, March 11, at Zayed Sports City in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. This will feature the finals of their open-weight tournament, with Marcos Oliveira taking on Shamil Abdurahimov.
In a lengthy discussion by Skype on Thursday, we spoke with Randall Yogachandra about this event, the concept behind the ADFC, and the importance of Abu Dhabi to the entire sporting world. They have big plans to expand throughout the Middle East and North Africa region, and work with other promotions all around the world, perhaps one day leading to the formation of an international federation for MMA.
We also open with a brief review and commentary on the main televised fights from this weekend. While Strikeforce certainly had an exciting show, the defeat of Dan Hornbuckle and Jim Wallhead in the quarterfinals of the Bellator welterweight tournament again showed that this might be the best tournament Bellator has ever held.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Jens Sejer Andersen, the International Director of Play the Game (http://www.playthegame.org).
Based in Denmark, Play the Game is an organization "aiming to strengthen the ethical foundation of sport and promote democracy, transparency and freedom of expression in sport." Particular attention has recently been given to the movement to establish an international agency to battle corruption in sport.
We spoke with Jens Andersen about the latest developments in this movement, including the establishment of a task force set up by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to come up with recommendations to fight irregular and illegal sports betting as well as other forms of corruption. We analyzed the strong and weak points of the IOC plan, and discussed whether or not the legal gambling industry can be viewed as an ally in the battle against corruption in sport. And we discussed the important role which the fans can play in this fight, which ultimately involves determining if all the sports which the fans enjoy are what they appear to be and are on the level, or not.
Also, March 6, 2011, marks the fifth anniversary of this show, No Holds Barred, as a podcast. March 8 is also the fortieth anniversary of the first fight between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier. We tie these two anniversaries together by noting the long fight Ali had for justice both inside and outside the ring, and the view held by one of the very few supporters Ali had in the media at that time, Howard Cosell, that "anybody who would call himself or herself a journalist has the duty to act as a watchdog, protecting the public interest against the increasingly arrogant and powerful sports Establishment."

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman presents interviews and commentary from the spectacular 2011 NCAA Div. I Wrestling Championships, held March 17-19 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
We have comments from the Outstanding Wrestler of this tournament, Anthony Robles, the 125-pound champion from Arizona State, who finished this season undefeated. Born without a right leg, his rise to the top in college wrestling is one of the most moving and important sports stories in the world. He said he now will focus on motivational speaking. We also have comments from Bubba Jenkins, the 157-pound champion, also from Arizona State, who won his finals match with a stunning pin of previously-unbeaten David Taylor, the freshman phenom from Penn State. Bubba Jenkins said that he now plans to fight professionally in mixed martial arts. We have comments from two of the wrestlers who also finished this season undefeated, 165-pound champion Jordan Burroughs of Nebraska and 174-pound champion Jon Reader of Iowa State. Both of these wrestlers plan to continue wrestling and will try to make the U.S. Olympic Team in freestyle wrestling. And we have comments from two coaches who were themselves Olympic gold medalists in freestyle wrestling, Kevin Jackson of Iowa State and Cael Sanderson of Penn State, which won the team title.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with the head grappling coach at the Xtreme Couture gym in Las Vegas, Neil Melanson.
Neil had served for seven years in the U.S. Navy and for five years as a Special Agent in the Federal Air Marshal Service, doing counter-terrorism work. His quest to become a mixed martial arts fighter was cut short after he lost sight in one eye due to suffering from Behcet 's disease. Now he trains both professional and amateur fighters and gym students in various styles of grappling, for both grappling competitions and mixed martial arts.
He has also become one of the growing number of devotees of catch wrestling, also known as catch-as-catch-can wrestling. In this style of wrestling, you can win by submission or pin. A century ago, catch wrestling was one of the most popular professional sports in America and the world.
Neil has trained under the legendary Gene LeBell, and now helps train MMA legend Randy Couture, including in catch wrestling and how it applies to mixed martial arts.
In our recent phone interview, we discussed many of the prominent styles of grappling, including Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and catch wrestling. We compared the techniques and methods of these great grappling disciplines, and discussed how they applied to mixed martial arts.
We also examined the relatively small but blossoming movement to revive catch wrestling. Could the establishment of a new infrastructure of tournaments and training centers for catch wrestling resuscitate it as both a competitive and spectator sport sometime in the future? Many people would like that to occur, but there is a long, long way to go until anything close to that happens. We thus discussed some of the things that could be done to expand the reach of this sport, the rules for catch wrestling, and more.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with American Top Team mixed martial arts fighter and two-time ADCC world champion Jeff Monson (http://jeffmonson.com).
His next fight is Friday, April 1, in the main event at Fight Time 4 (http://www.fighttimepromotions.com). His opponent will be former King of the Cage champion Tony Lopez in a fight to crown the first-ever ISKA heavyweight champion. This card will take place at the War Memorial Auditorium in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. It will be available on Fox Sports Net and SunSports FightZone series in Florida, and will also be shown live as an Internet pay-per-view on GoFightLive (http://www.gfl.tv).
We spoke with Jeff Monson by phone Tuesday afternoon about this fight and a number of important issues in mixed martial arts. He discussed his very active schedule of fights, even as he is now 40 years old. He is a world-class grappler, and we analyzed his continuing improvement as a striker through his training at American Top Team.
We also discussed the absence of health insurance in a sport where the aim is to hurt your opponent, a situation he called "unfathomable". And we examined the need for some type of union or association of fighters, something Jeff believes is "doable" if a proper structure is created and fighters fight in their own interests and stick together.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Rob Maysey of the Mixed Martial Arts Fighters Association (MMAFA) (http://www.mmafa.tv).
The announcement Saturday, March 12, that Zuffa, the parent company of UFC, had purchased their strongest rival promotion, Strikeforce, has highlighted the absence of any type of fighter association in mixed martial arts. The MMAFA seeks to fill that role, and models itself on the Major League Baseball Players' Association and the Screen Actors Guild, in order to maximize the influence and earning capacity of its members in the sport of mixed martial arts.
We spoke late Sunday night with Rob Maysey about these major developments in mixed martial arts. We discussed what had actually happened with this purchase of Strikeforce by Zuffa, and how the previous co-owner of Strikeforce, Silicon Valley Sports & Entertainment, had decided to dump it. We discussed the role of Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker in these negotiations, what we expect Zuffa to do with Strikeforce, and what is next for other mixed martial arts organizations, including M-1 Global and Bellator. We also commented on what might happen with the American cable TV network Showtime, which still has a contract to telecast Strikeforce events, and the potential for another powerful rival mixed martial arts company to emerge under these conditions.
This new situation gives one promotional company, Zuffa, control of a very high percentage of top-ranked fighters in the world. We discussed the implications of the creation of this virtual monopoly both in terms of potential antitrust issues as well as the rights and compensation of fighters.
And we discussed the immediate need for fighters to utilize this present situation to organize themselves into their own association.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses why combat sports fans should watch the Jay Hieron-Rick Hawn MMA fight at Bellator 43 this Saturday, May 7, on MTV2 instead of the Manny Pacquiao-Shane Mosley boxing pay-per-view.
We also discuss the recent finding that retired NFL star Dave Duerson, who committed suicide in February at age 50, suffered from brain damage caused by the disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). We again raise the issue of the future of combat and contact sports in light of new scientific research into the frightening dangers of repeated head and brain trauma.

On this special April 1 edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman explains why he is retiring from radio and now becoming a country music superstar.
After fooling around for a bit on this April Fools' Day, we return to reality by previewing some of the best and real combat sports action taking place this weekend.
The start of the 2011 European M-1 Selection tournament takes place Friday, April 1, in Makhachkala, the capital of the Republic of Dagestan in Russia. It will be streamed for free and live on the M-1 Global web site (http://www.M-1Global.com) and the M-1 Global Facebook fan page starting at 10:00 AM EDT / 7:00 AM PDT on Friday, April 1.
We also again preview the FightTime 4 main event which pits Jeff Monson against Tony Lopez for the ISKA heavyweight title, at the War Memorial Auditorium in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. This card will be shown live as an Internet pay-per-view on GoFightLive.
On Saturday, April 2, among the many boxing cards taking place around the world will be the highly-anticipated rematch between WBO light flyweight champion Giovani Segura and the man from whom he won that title, the previously-unbeaten Ivan Calderon. The rematch takes place at the Auditorio del Estado in Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico. This fight will be shown live in the U.S. on pay-per-view.
We also discuss the defense of his European lightweight title by unbeaten John Murray against Spanish champion Karim El Ouazghari in London in the U.K. This fight will be shown in the U.K. on Sky Sports.
The Bellator Fighting Championships will have one of their strongest cards of the year this Saturday, April 2, at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. Headlining Bellator 39 will be their lightweight champion and one of the best mixed martial arts fighters in the world, Eddie Alvarez, who will defend his belt against Pat Curran, who earned the title shot by winning the Bellator lightweight tournament last year. In a welterweight tournament semifinal fight, former champion Lyman Good takes on unbeaten judo Olympian Rick Hawn. In a lightweight semifinal fight, submission artist Toby Imada takes on Patricky "Pitbull" Freire. And in a welterweight fight, Ben Saunders faces Matt Lee.
Bellator 39 will be shown live in the U.S. on MTV2.
And we comment on the Combate Extremo event also taking place Saturday, April 2, at the Arena Coliseo in Monterrey, Mexico, and more.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with our colleague and correspondent Chris Thomas about the state of mixed martial arts.
On the top of the list of issues we discussed was the recent buyout by Zuffa, the parent company of UFC, of their main competitor, Strikeforce. We examined the issue of whether or not this might violate antitrust legislation in the U.S. We discussed the possible precedent set by the 1955 U.S. Supreme Court case, United States v. International Boxing Club of New York (IBC), in which the court said that the U.S. government could take the IBC to trial for having an effective monopoly on boxing, despite the antitrust exemption that the U.S. Congress had granted to baseball. The U.S. government prevailed, and later won its case against the IBC.
We also examined other issues relating to the state of MMA, including who benefits and who does not with this buyout, what other or aspiring major promoters might do to succeed under the present conditions, and more.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses the impact that the death of 28-year-old New York Rangers enforcer Derek Boogaard from still-unknown causes might have on combat sports. Boogaard had suffered numerous concussions from his hockey fights. His family is donating his brain to the Sports Legacy Institute at the Boston University School of Medicine to see if he had suffered from the brain disease CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy), which is caused by repeated head and brain trauma.
How this will affect combat sports like mixed martial arts and boxing, where inflicting head and brain trauma and causing concussions are keys to winning fights, remains to be seen. One possible scenario is that the popularity, exposure, and sponsorships of these sports will all fall dramatically at some point. That could open the door for safer combat sports which have much less head trauma, such as the various forms of grappling.
Grappling, however, is not on the program of the Olympic Games, the largest sporting event in the world. We thus discuss how one or more style of grappling might gain inclusion in the Olympics, the international structure of sports which the International Olympic committee uses as a feeder for the Olympics, the importance of events like the World Combat Games, how grappling in America is falling behind in the movement for Olympic inclusion, and much more.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again speaks with Evgeni Kogan, the director of operations of M-1 Global (http://www.m-1global.com).
In the changing business landscape of mixed martial arts, M-1 Global has continued to expand its activities around the world. The M-1 Challenge 24 event on March 25 from Norfolk, Virginia, was one of the best cards of the year, and drew good ratings on Showtime in the U.S. Now they are busy planning their next event, M-1 Challenge 25, for Thursday, April 28, from the Ice Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia.
We spoke on Tuesday with Evgeni Kogan, who had just arrived in St. Petersburg to oversee that event. We discussed some of the top fighters on the M-1 Global roster, and when we will be seeing them fight next, including in the U.S. He explained the business relationship between M-1 Global, Showtime, and Strikeforce, and why that has not changed thus far even after the buyout of Strikeforce by Zuffa. We also discussed the growing role of Russia and Eastern Europe in the combat sports world and in sports in general, and much more.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Stephen Koepfer, the co-founder of the Coalition to Legalize Mixed Martial Arts in New York (http://nymmanow.blogspot.com), and the head coach at New York Combat Sambo (http://www.nycombatsambo.com).
We spoke on Friday afternoon, beginning by noting the growing public support for the legalization of mixed martial arts in New York. We discussed some of what has been done and still needs to be done to win this battle in the New York State legislature.
The sport of sambo is growing in stature internationally, and we discussed some of the recent successes by American athletes in international sambo competition. We also noted how more people are realizing the effectiveness of sambo as one of the many disciplines which are essential for mixed martial arts, and how many athletes with success in both sport and combat sambo are now achieving success in mixed martial arts as well.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman previews the Joseph King Kong Agbeko-Abner Mares fight coming up April 23, reviews the recent series of upsets in boxing including the victory by Victor Ortiz over Andre Berto on April 16, and discusses the implications of the U.S. government indictment of the founders of the three major online poker sites and the shutting down of those sites.
IBF bantamweight champion Joseph King Kong Agbeko (28-2, 22 KOs) of Accra, Ghana, and the Bronx, New York, will defend his title against the unbeaten Abner Mares (21-0-1, 13 KOs) of Hawaiian Gardens, California by way of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, in the finals of the Showtime bantamweight tournament. This fight will take place Saturday, April 23, at the Nokia Theatre L.A. LIVE in downtown Los Angeles, and will be telecast in the U.S. on Showtime.
We spoke with Joseph Agbeko at a recent media workout at John's Boxing Gym in the South Bronx about what to expect in this fight. We also hear Abner Mares talk about this fight during a recent media conference call.
Not only has there been a rash of unexpected results of late in boxing, but it also is just as unexpected that so many upsets have been taking place at all in a sport where promoters and networks like to control the outcomes of fights through careful matchmaking as much as possible. The latest of these upsets in major fights took place in the main events on Saturday night, April 16, on both HBO and Showtime.
Victor Ortiz was still trying to live down accusations of being a quitter after indicating that he no longer wanted to fight in his 2009 TKO loss to Marcos Maidana, and a safety-first draw with Lamont Peterson in 2010. Now moving up to welterweight to face the then-unbeaten WBC champion Andre Berto, Ortiz vowed to prove that he had the heart of a fighter and a champion, and that his critics were wrong. Ortiz certainly re-established himself as a fighter to watch, as he won a bruising 12-round decision over Berto in the main event at the MGM Grand Theater at Foxwoods in Mashantucket, Connecticut. In that fight, yet another fight of the year candidate, both fighters were knocked down twice. We discuss that fight, as well as the upset victory by Orlando Salido against another previously-unbeaten fighter, Juan Manuel Lopez, in front of a pro-Lopez crowd in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.
On Friday, April 15, it was announced that eleven defendants, including the founders of the three largest Internet poker companies doing business in the United States - PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker, and Absolute Poker - had been indicted in the U.S. Southern District of New York on charges of bank fraud, money laundering, and illegal gambling offenses. The domain names of these online poker sites were also seized by the U.S, government. According to U.S. law, Internet gambling is illegal within the U.S. One of these three poker companies, Full Tilt Poker, has been a major sponsor of mixed martial arts fighters, especially of late in Strikeforce.
We discuss the implications of these charges, and how they highlight the need for an international sports anti-corruption agency. We also hear the question about this asked of Jacque Rogge, president of the International Olympic Committee, at a recent news conference by Jens Andersen, the International Director of the anti-corruption organization Play the Game (http://www.playthegame.org).

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman reports from a screening of the forthcoming movie "Warrior". This major film, scheduled for release in September 2011, is a drama focusing on the quest of two estranged brothers to win a Grand Prix MMA tournament.
While Hollywood is known for its preposterous stories and clichés, especially in fight films, previews of the rough cut of this film have been getting glowing reviews from both general movie observers and many in the MMA community as well. Many are already mentioning the riveting performances of stars Tom Hardy and Nick Nolte as deserving of Oscar nominations.
We went to a media screening of "Warrior" Thursday night in New York, and recorded the comments of several of those in attendance immediately after the film concluded. We spoke with Jim Genia (mmajournalist.blogspot.com), Paula Romero, Kahleem Poole (kahl-one.com), Jeannie Rodriguez, and Al Bevilacqua (NYWrestling.com).
While this film is far from perfect in its portrayal of mixed martial arts, everyone with whom we spoke gave it a thumbs up. Our unanimous conclusion was: Whether you are a fan of MMA or not, "Warrior" is a must-see film.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Bjorn Rebney, the CEO of the Bellator Fighting Championships (http://www.bellator.com).
Their next show, Bellator 41, will be held Saturday, April 16, at the Cocopah Resort and Casino, in Somerton, Arizona, near Yuma. It will be shown live in the U.S. on MTV2.
On that card, Bellator featherweight champion Joe Warren has a non-title fight against Marcos "Louro" Galvao, and Bellator bantamweight champion Zack Makovsky has a non-title fight against Chad Robichaux. There are also the two semi-final fights in their season four featherweight tournament, as Wilson Reis fights Patricio "Pitbull" Freire and Kenny Foster fights Daniel Straus.
We spoke with Bjorn Rebney by phone Wednesday evening about this card and the past, present, and future of Bellator. We discussed their tournament format, which clearly distinguishes Bellator from most mixed martial arts companies where promoters pick and choose who gets title shots and who does not. We discussed their business model, which, according to Bjorn Rebney, has gotten them to a "cash flow break-even" point in this, their third year of running shows. He explained that unlike some other companies, Bellator is not for sale, will not be in the future, and why. We also discussed many other topics including their schedule for the season four tournament finals, their deal with MTV2 and their rising TV ratings, the possibility of co-promotion with other MMA companies, when some of their newer fighters will be making their debuts, the return of women fighters, and much more.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Coach George Hero, the legendary coach and founder of the Midwood High School wrestling team in Brooklyn, New York, about his victory by pin at MidwoodMania II.
MidwoodMania II took place Saturday, April 30, at the Midwood High School Gymnasium in Brooklyn. In the main event, the 53-year-old Coach Hero pinned Adam Waxman, a 1987 graduate of Midwood, who was the first captain of the Midwood wrestling team, and is the owner of Fitness 1 Training in Brooklyn.
Right after his victory, we discussed with Coach Hero how he won this match and why he is continuing to wrestle. We also spoke with Adam Waxman, and we spoke with Jakub Pawlowski, a Midwood captain in 2007-08 who now wrestles for NYU, and who won his match at MidwoodMania II by decision. Why people become wrestlers for life and why wrestling is more than a sport but also a lifestyle were key themes of our discussion.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again speaks with Mark Pavelich, the owner and president of the Maximum Fighting Championship (MFC) (http://www.maximumfighting.com/).
MFC will be holding its first show in the province of Ontario, Canada, this Friday, April 8. MFC 29 will take place at Caesars Windsor and be telecast live on HDNet Fights.
Headlining this card are two title fights. MFC light heavyweight champion Ryan Jimmo (14-1) will face Zak Cummings (13-2), while MFC welterweight champion Douglas Lima (17-4) will fight Terry Martin (21-8).
We spoke with the always-outspoken Mark Pavelich by phone on Wednesday about the significance of this show as MFC continues to grow as a promotion. He explained why MFC has been so successful, and why he expects many of the new MMA events cropping up in Ontario not to last. He offered his thoughts on the buyout by Zuffa, the parent company of UFC, of Strikeforce, and how that deal is likely to end up. We discussed how the Ontario Athletics Commission is only permitting the use of a cage, and not a ring, in mixed martial arts. We also discussed the relationship between boxing and MMA, and much more.
We also offer a weekend preview of the major combat sports events around the world.
In wrestling, the U.S. Open takes place April 8 and 9 in Cleveland, Ohio, with a live webcast on TheMat.com (http://themat.com).
Boxing is headlined by the Hozumi Hasegawa-Jhonny Gonzalez featherweight title fight on April 8 in Kobe, Japan, and the Marcos Maidana-Erik Morales fight on April 9 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Besides the important MFC card, this is another busy weekend in MMA. On Saturday, April 9, Bellator 40 comes from the First Council Casino in Newkirk, Oklahoma, and will be telecast live in the U.S. on MTV2. On that card, Bellator welterweight champion Ben Askren fights Nick "The Goat" Thomson in a non-title fight, Jay Hieron fights Brent Weedman in a welterweight tournament semifinal, and Michael Chandler fights Lloyd Woodard in a lightweight tournament semifinal. Ringside 10 also takes place Saturday, April 9, from the Bell Centre in Montreal, headlined by a Patrick Côté-Kalib Starnes fight. And Strikeforce returns to Showtime with welterweight champion Nick Diaz vs. Paul Daley, lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez vs. Tatsuya "Crusher" Kawajiri, Gegard Mousasi vs. Keith Jardine in a light heavyweight bout, and Shinya Aoki vs. Lyle Beerbohm in a lightweight bout.
In addition, we open by noting the open letter sent by two-time World Absolute Champion in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Rodrigo "Comprido" Medeiros about the need to combat steroids and doping in BJJ (http://www.adcombat.com/news/2011-04-06/kid-peligro-jiu-jitsu-news-it-just-got-real-rodrigo-compridos-open-letter-about-ster).

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Dan Gable, Rulon Gardner, and Anthony Robles.
We spoke with each of them right before the U.S.-Russia dual freestyle wrestling meet in New York on May 5, 2011, in the Times Square area.
Dan Gable (http://www.dangable.com), the legendary Olympic gold medalist in freestyle wrestling and former coach who led the University of Iowa Hawkeyes to 15 NCAA Div. I titles, is retiring from his full-time position at Iowa. Now he will be working more on his own, and focusing on wrestling, both nationally and internationally. In our discussion, he emphasized the need for all wrestling organizations around the world to work together. He commented on changes which are needed in the current international wrestling rules, the lack of enough good college coaches in the U.S., and more.
Rulon Gardner (http://rulongardner.com), the Olympic gold medalist in Greco-Roman wrestling who defeated Alexander Karelin to win that gold medal in 2000, retired from competition after winning a bronze medal at the 2004 Olympics. Now, at age 39, he is considering the possibility of returning to the mat and making another medal run. We discussed with him about his style fitting in better with the current Greco rules, his desire to help the U.S. team whether wrestles or not, the satisfaction he has achieved from wrestling, and more.
Anthony Robles (http://choose2beunstoppable.com), born without a right leg, added to his amazing life story by wrestling four seasons for Arizona State, becoming a three-time All-American, and going undefeated in his senior year en route to winning the 2011 NCAA Div. I national championship at 125 pounds. He is now retired from competition and is beginning a career as a motivational speaker. His message is that everyone can be unstoppable in life. He explained that he will still be around wrestling, why it is a love of his life, and more.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with one of the legends of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Rodrigo "Comprido" Medeiros (http://compridobjj.com).
In 1999 and 2000, Comprido won the black belt absolute division in the Mundials, the jiu-jitsu world championships, and owns the record of the fastest submission in a black belt final. He now is primarily instructing other athletes at the FLO Mixed Martial Arts academy in Palatine, Illinois, near Chicago.
Comprido recently joined a growing number of people in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu who are calling for the institution of drug testing in that sport to combat cheating. He particularly gained much attention addressing this issue squarely in his "Open letter to all practitioners of BJJ" (http://www.adcombat.com/news/2011-04-06/kid-peligro-jiu-jitsu-news-it-just-got-real-rodrigo-compridos-open-letter-about-ster).
We spoke with Comprido Monday afternoon by Skype about his open letter and this important issue. He explained how he actually witnessed an athlete die from steroids during the 2000 Mundials. He believes that steroid use in jiu-jitsu is still a major problem, and he wants this martial art and sport cleaned up. We discussed why this is essential for the health of the athletes, for making the sport fair, and for setting an example for the youth. We discussed how the athletes, fans, media, and everyone else must speak up on this issue, and much more.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again speaks with the legendary coach and founder of the Midwood High School wrestling team in Brooklyn, New York, George Hero.
The 53-year-old Coach Hero will once again take to the mat in this event, which is aimed at promoting and popularizing the sport of wrestling and the Midwood High School wrestling team. At MidwoodMania II, Coach Hero will take on Adam Waxman in a match under NCAA rules. Adam Waxman, a 1987 graduate of Midwood, was the first captain of the Midwood wrestling team. Since 1990, he has been the owner of Fitness 1 Training in Brooklyn, so we can expect him to offer stiff competition to his mentor and former coach.
There will also be a full card of matches in folkstyle, freestyle, and Greco-Roman wrestling. This year, not only are numerous Midwood alumni returning to the mat, but also many other alumni from schools in Brooklyn will be competing as well.
MidwoodMania II takes place Saturday, April 30, beginning at 11 AM ET, at the Midwood High School Gymnasium at 2839 Bedford Avenue in Brooklyn. There is a Facebook page with more information about MidwoodMania II at http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=183221558382474.
We spoke with Coach Hero on Tuesday about this event and what it means to the sport of wrestling and the combat sports in general.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with sports journalist Oksana Kehoe (http://oksanakehoe.com/).
Born in Russia and living in America for the past decade, Oksana has covered numerous sporting events, including boxing and mixed martial arts cards, as well as those of other sports, for both Russian and American media.
The rise of Russia and the countries of the former Soviet Union in recent years in the sporting world in general and the combat sports in particular has captured the attention of many people. We met on Monday evening in midtown Manhattan to discuss this phenomenon, as well as the decline of success of so many American athletes, especially in the combat sports. She also explained why she moved to America and how she got involved in sports media. This was just one of the first of what we hope will be many discussions on this topic, including with Oksana.

On this audio edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses the major grappling events which are taking place this summer. Events both big and small featuring wrestling, grappling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, judo, sambo, and sumo are mentioned. This calendar of events in the various styles of grappling culminates with the most important and prestigious grappling event of all, the ADCC 2011 Submission Fighting World Championships, which take place Saturday, September 24, and Sunday, September 25, at the Capital FM Arena in Nottingham, U. K.
In addition, we discuss the general critique of sports by George Orwell in his 1945 essay "The Sporting Spirit" (http://orwell.ru/library/articles/spirit/english/e_spirit). In it, Orwell argued that "sport is an unfailing cause of ill-will" and "international sporting contests lead to orgies of hatred". We disagree that these conclusions apply across the board to modern grappling events, but also stress the need for those involved in these events to emphasize their positive social values.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with wrestling legends Bobby Douglas (http://www.bobbydouglasbook.com) and Bruce Baumgartner (http://www.brucebaumgartner.com).
We spoke with each of them right before the U.S.-Russia dual freestyle wrestling meet in New York on May 5, 2011, in the Times Square area.
Among his numerous accomplishments, Bobby Douglas was the first African-American to make a U.S. Olympic wrestling team, and the first African-American U.S. Olympic wrestling coach. He also coached Arizona State to an NCAA Div. I title in 1988, and at Iowa State coached Cael Sanderson to his record-setting four undefeated seasons and four national titles. He also helped coach the U.S. team at this May 5 meet.
We spoke with Coach Douglas about his newly-released biography, "Bobby Douglas: Life and Legacy of an American Wrestling Legend", written by Craig Sesker, and its importance for wrestling. We discussed the many benefits of wrestling, some of the problems facing college wrestling, the importance of the Beat the Streets program for wrestling, the problems facing U.S. wrestling internationally including keeping wrestlers in the Olympic program, the need to tweak high school and college rules to make them closer to international rules, why American wrestlers are improperly prepared to wrestle at the Olympic level, and more.
Bruce Baumgartner is a four-time Olympic medalist in freestyle wrestling, having won two gold medals along with one silver and one bronze, all at heavyweight. He is currently the Director of Athletics at Edinboro University and on the board of USA Wrestling.
We discussed with him the problem of American wrestlers not staying with the Olympic program long enough, the need to adapt to international rules while maintaining the tradition of American folkstyle, the difficulties facing college wrestling, and more.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman reviews the U.S.-Russia freestyle wrestling dual meet held Thursday, May 5, outdoors in the Times Square area in New York, with wrestlers Henry Cejudo and Jordan Burroughs, Coach Zeke Jones, and media members Jason Bryant and Kristal Hart. The U.S. won this dual meet, five matches to two.
After taking a hiatus of almost three years from wrestling, 2008 Olympic gold medalist Henry Cejudo is back competing in freestyle wrestling. In this meet, he defeated junior world bronze medalist Rasul Mashezov of Russia, 2-0, 4-3, at 55 kg/121 pounds. We spoke with him after his match about his return to wrestling and his plans for the future.
Jordan Burroughs, who won his second NCAA Div. I national championship earlier this year and dominated his opponents in an undefeated season, also gained much notoriety by winning the Hodge Trophy as the best college wrestler in the U.S. Now that he has completed his college career at Nebraska, he is focusing full-time on freestyle wrestling. At this dual meet, for the first time he faced a wrestler from Russia, Aniuar Geduev, and prevailed, 1-0, 2-1. He also is wrestling at 74 kg/163 pounds, which is actually two pounds lighter than he did in college. We spoke with Jordan Burroughs after his match to discuss his transition from folkstyle to freestyle wrestling and his plans.
In addition, we spoke right after this meet with U.S. National Freestyle Coach Zeke Jones about how the American wrestlers performed and what they need to do to improve their wrestling. And we spoke with Jason Bryant of USA Wrestling and Kristal Hart of the Kristal Hart Show on Manhattan Neighborhood Network about this meet and the entire experience of this event, which was held as part of the Beat the Streets Gala and fundraising effort.

On this audio edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Dr. Margaret Goodman, a neurologist, the former chair of the Medical Advisory Board of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, and the medical correspondent for No Holds Barred.
Once again, with the firing of now-former UFC fighter Nate Marquardt, the issue of the use of testosterone replacement therapy by elite fighters has come to the fore. After admittedly taking testosterone injections, Marquardt's levels were too high for him to be allowed to fight by the Pennsylvania commission on last week's UFC televised card. He was subsequently fired by UFC.
We thus spoke Friday by phone with Dr. Goodman, one of the strongest opponents of doping in sports, about what we know about this case and what more can be done to fight the rampant doping in combat sports like boxing and MMA. She called for the establishment of an outside agency to fight doping and conduct drug testing for these sports, beyond the often woeful efforts of the various state athletic commissions. She also called for athletes in these sports to step up and demand more effective anti-doping measures, as Floyd Mayweather Jr. has done. We also discussed the reported return to boxing of former middleweight champion Jermain Taylor following a series of brutal knockouts, the need for fans to speak up and contact the athletic commissions on these issues, and much more.

On this audio edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman pays tribute to the noted sports and boxing journalist George Kimball (http://www.georgekimball.com).
After a long battle with esophageal cancer, George Kimball passed away Wednesday, July 6, at age 67, in New York.
While many reminiscences are being written about his life, we are focusing on his contributions to the battle for boxing reform. The lead boxing writer for the Boston Herald for 25 years, George was one of the few newspaper reporters who helped launch the Boxing Writers' Rankings Poll in 2000, and remained a registered voter in it until its demise some years later. We also read comments about his passing from Howie Sirota, who founded the Boxing Writers' Rankings Poll.
On October 18, 2008, we conducted an interview with George in Atlantic City before the Bernard Hopkins-Kelly Pavlik fight. We discussed the book he had just written, Four Kings: Leonard, Hagler, Hearns, Duran and the Last Great Era of Boxing (http://www.mcbooks.com/bookstore/product_details.php?id=739). This marvelous book traced the intertwined careers of Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvelous Marvin Hagler, Thomas Hearns, and Roberto Duran. We spoke with him right after he had participated in a forum on the book with trainer Emanuel Steward, promoter Bob Arum, and announcer Larry Merchant.
We also discussed with him why such an era of so many great rivalries can't happen today, why media coverage of boxing is harder to do today than it was in the past, the changed role of publicists, the decline of newspapers, the Internet and television and the future of boxing, and more. As part of our tribute to him, we replay that interview on No Holds Barred.

On this audio edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses the main lessons of the three main combat sports shows televised this weekend in the U.S.
The best of the three was the M-1 Challenge XXVI mixed martial arts card, which took place Friday, July 8, at The Hangar in Costa Mesa, California, and was telecast live on Showtime. In the main event, heavyweight M-1 contender Kenny "Deuce" Garner won by a second-round KO over Pat Bennett. In the co-main event of this card, which had five fights televised, Arthur Guseinov knocked out Tyson Jeffries with a picture-perfect spinning back fist in the first round of their middleweight fight.
The next best show was also on Showtime, but featured boxing. On Saturday, July 9, from Carson, California, Brandon Rios retained his WBA lightweight title with a third-round stoppage of Urbano Antillon in an all-out battle. Also, Carlos Molina upset Kermit Cintron, winning a clear-cut, 10-round unanimous decision in their junior middleweight bout.
The biggest disgrace occurred on the HBO-televised boxing card from Atlantic City, New Jersey, also on July 9. Junior middleweight Paul Williams was given a majority decision victory over Erislandy Lara in a fight which virtually no one except two of the judges thought Williams had won.
We thus discuss the significance of these three shows. We also comment on some recent developments in grappling, including plans for the 2011 ADCC Submission Fighting World Championships, which take place September 24-25 in Nottingham, England, and the attempts to revive catch-as-catch-can wrestling as a real sport.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman explodes more myths about the combat sports. Discussed and analyzed are the almost-universally panned Pacquiao-Mosley mismatch, why Floyd Mayweather Jr. is sitting at home, the issue of the fight against doping in boxing and MMA, the real reasons why MMA is still illegal in New York, the self-destructive insularity of the American sports establishment, the never-ending failure to promote and market wrestling properly, and much more.

On this audio edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses some of the latest downs and ups in the world of boxing, and reports from the Floyd Mayweather-Victor Ortiz news conference in New York, which took place Tuesday, June 28.
After a 16-month hiatus from the ring, the unbeaten Mayweather will return on September 17 against the WBC welterweight champion Ortiz in a fight in Las Vegas and on HBO Pay-Per-View. Both fighters have also agreed to undergo Olympic-style drug-testing administered by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), including random, unannounced blood and urine testing.
We spoke with Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, about the issue of drug-testing and the importance of this fight. We also got some comments from Floyd Mayweather on drug-testing, which may surprise some people, as well as on this fight.
After the news conference, we sat down with our correspondent and colleague Keisha Morrisey, who also covered the news conference, to discuss the Mayweather-Ortiz fight, the problems in the marketing of boxing, the latest hometown decisions in boxing, and more.

On this audio edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman reviews the impressive twelfth-round TKO victory by Saul "Canelo" Alvarez over Ryan Rhodes, and the highly unimpressive Strikeforce card, which both took place Saturday, June 18.
The brightest spot for the Strikeforce card was the use of catch wrestling by Josh Barnett in his second-round submission victory over Brett Rogers. Could catch wrestling, with victory by pin or submission, and the style used when professional wrestling was to a degree a real sport in the early twentieth century, make a comeback? We ask that question, but others will have to provide the answer.

On this audio edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman presents interviews with MMA legend and Showtime announcer Pat Miletich, Showtime Sports executive Ken Hershman, and boxing promoter Lou DiBella. These interviews were conducted Wednesday, June 1, in New York at the final news conference for the Carl Froch-Glen Johnson Super Six World Boxing Classic semifinal fight. That fight takes place Saturday, June 4, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and will be televised in the U.S. on Showtime and in the U.K. on Sky Sports.
One of the pioneers of mixed martial arts, Pat Miletich is now primarily focusing on his duties as an announcer and in other ventures. We discussed those, including his role announcing the upcoming July 8 M-1 Global card on Showtime, as well as Strikeforce Challengers events. We discussed the unbeaten heavyweight Guram Gugenishvili, who headlines the July 8 M-1 Global card. We also discussed the impact that the Miletich style of striving to be a well-rounded fighter has had on MMA, his experience in the old Extreme Fighting company, and much more.
Ken Hershman, the Showtime Sports Executive Vice President and General Manager, had had a very busy year with a full slate of boxing and MMA cards. We spoke about the importance of these sports to Showtime, his thoughts on the future of Strikeforce and Showtime, the importance of events like the July 8 M-1 Global show on Showtime, the July 30 fight on Showtime between MMA legends Fedor Emelianenko and Dan Henderson, the need for the New York politicians to legalize MMA, and more.
Lou DiBella also has a busy schedule. Besides promoting Glen Johnson in this June 4 fight, he is co-promoting with Gary Shaw back-to-back boxing cards on June 10 and 11 called Boricua Invasion I and II. These cards, held the same weekend as the Puerto Rican Day Parade, will both take place at the Roseland Ballroom in New York and showcase up-and-coming Puerto Rican fighters. Boricua Invasion I will air live on ESPN2 Friday Night Fights, while Boricua Boxing II will be televised live on Showtime on ShoBox. We discussed these cards, why boxing has remained so popular in Puerto Rico and with Puerto Ricans elsewhere, the prospects of Glen Johnson in the June 4 fight, and more.
Plus, we close with one last question for Carl Froch about whether or not he expects to knock out Glen Johnson.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman presents our first video show. As with any maiden voyage, there are still some kinks to work out, but we thank our colleague Ian Carpenter for being the video producer of this episode of No Holds Barred, which was recorded May 26 at the Magic Pumpkin Studios in Astoria, Queens, New York.
On the show, we begin by discussing the historic victory by Bernard Hopkins over Jean Pascal to become the top light heavyweight boxer in the world. Hopkins, at age 46, also becomes the oldest boxer ever to win a major world title. But we also discuss some other aging fighters who have not done so well of late, including boxer Roy Jones Jr. and mixed martial arts fighters Randy Couture and Dan Severn.
We next discuss the growing awareness of the severity of injuries in sports, including the incredible number of deaths in auto racing and American football, especially in high school and college football. We also note the growing number of injuries of different types for main event mixed martial arts fighters today.
And we conclude by discussing grappling and how some MMA fighters even today emphasize their submission skills. These include the unbeaten heavyweight Guram Gugenishivili, who headlines the M-1 Challenge XXVI card on July 8 in the main event against Pat Bennett.
While we do plan to do more video shows, we will also continue our audio shows as well.

He is documenting his findings on his web site, Wrestling Roots (http://wrestlingroots.org).
We spoke with him by Skype on Sunday morning (Saturday night in the U.S.) while he was in Shanghai and on his way to a town in Shanxi Province which he says is known as the "wrestling village" of China. He will be spending 10 to 12 more weeks in Asia before returning to the U.S. and writing a book about his travels.
We open this show with commentary on some of the latest doings in boxing and mixed martial arts, continuing topics discussed on previous shows. We discuss the majority decision victory by Carl Froch over Glen Johnson on June 4 in the Super Six World Boxing Classic semifinal fight in Atlantic City, the overall success of this tournament, and the upcoming Boricua Invasion boxing cards at Roseland Ballroom in New York on June 10 and 11.
Turning to MMA, we discuss the dilemma faced by Showtime when their current contract with Strikeforce runs out, the need for them to organize some type of World MMA Classic similar to the World Boxing Classic, and the controversies involving more mindless behavior by fighters and so-called "media". More importantly, we discuss the frightening news that UFC fighter Brian Foster has reportedly been "cleared by doctors to train and compete again" despite having recently had bleeding on his brain.
With boxing and MMA beset by problems, the door is opening for various styles of grappling and wrestling to advance as spectator sports. We thus discuss how these combat sports could take advantage of this situation.

On this audio edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with boxers Luis Del Valle and Dat Nguyen, who headline the Boricua Invasion card on Saturday, June 11, and also analyzes the stalling of legislation to re-legalize mixed martial arts in New York.
Boricua Invasion I and II take place Friday, June 10, and Saturday, June 11, both at Roseland Ballroom in New York. Boricua Invasion I will be televised on ESPN2 Friday Night Fights, while Boricua Invasion II will be televised on Showtime.
In the main event of Boricua Invasion II, Luis Del Valle (12-0, 10 KOs), originally from Bayamon, Puerto Rico, will face Dat Nguyen (17-1, 6 KOs), originally from Vietnam, in a 10-round featherweight bout. We spoke with both of them at the prefight news conference in New York on Wednesday. We discussed the importance of boxing to Puerto Ricans, their careers and goals, and what to expect Saturday night.
While this innovative pair of boxing cards on successive nights and on two television networks is moving forward, legislation to re-legalize mixed martial arts in New York appears less than likely to pass before the legislature adjourns on June 20. We discuss some of the reasons why, including the negative image of gambling casinos and those associated with them in New York and the stubbornness of the near-omnipotent 67-year-old Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, and how supporters of MMA must continue this battle.

On this audio edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Stephen Koepfer, the head coach at New York Combat Sambo (http://www.nycombatsambo.com) and the co-founder of the Coalition to Legalize Mixed Martial Arts in New York (http://nymmanow.blogspot.com).
Having recently returned from the Spartak Olympic Training Center in Ukraine, we spoke with him about why sambo continues to be such an important discipline and combat sport in Eastern Europe. Training in sambo is also seen as a way of promoting health and physical culture among the population.
We also gave a post-mortem on the attempts this year to get the New York legislature to re-legalize mixed martial arts. After once again being passed in the Senate, the bill was bottled up in committee in the Assembly and never reached the floor for a vote. We thus discuss why we must continue our efforts, the strengths and weaknesses of the battle for MMA in New York, why MMA fighters should be provided the same legal protections as boxers have under the Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act, and much more.

On this audio edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with heavyweight mixed martial arts fighter Kenny "Deuce" Garner (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Kenny-Deuce-Garner-Fan-Page/150141675024863).
Fighting out of American Top Team in Port St. Lucie, Florida, the exciting, colorful, and outspoken "Deuce" will be fighting in the main event of the M-1 Challenge card on Friday, July 8, at The Hangar in Costa Mesa, California. His opponent will be Pat Bennett, the Team Bombsquad fighter whom Garner defeated by first-round TKO in the 2010 M-1 Selection Americas tournament final on September 18. This card will be televised live in the U.S. on Showtime.
Both fighters in this main event have claimed that they are much improved since their first meeting. In this interview, recorded by phone on Tuesday afternoon, Kenny "Deuce" Garner vowed to end this rematch victoriously, and again in the first round. He discussed his subsequent loss to unbeaten M-1 heavyweight champion Guram Gugenishvili, and why he believes that he will defeat Guram if and when they meet again. He outlined the improvements he has made of late in both grappling and striking, at what weight we can expect to see him fight this time, and much more.
Plus, we open with a brief preview of some of the combat sports action coming up this weekend, including Bellator 46, the Don King-promoted boxing card on HBO featuring the return of Devon Alexander, the U.S. Pankration National Championships and World Team Trials, and the U.S. Sumo Open.

On this audio edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman previews the June 4 fight between WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch and Glen Johnson. This fight takes place in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and will be televised in the U.S. on Showtime and in the U.K. on Sky Sports.
The Froch-Johnson fight is the last semifinal bout in the lengthy Super Six World Boxing Classic, with the winner taking on unbeaten WBA champ Andre Ward in the finals.
We spoke with both Carl Froch (27-1, 20 KOs) and Glen Johnson (51-14-2, 35 KOs) on a media conference call last week about this fight.
We also address the issue of ethics in boxing, or the lack thereof, and the need for a code of ethics in sports, and especially in the contact and combat sports. We discuss this both in relation to the experience of the World Boxing Classic, both positive and negative, and to boxing in general.

On this audio edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses the main lessons from the disgraceful snoozefest of a fight between Wladimir Klitschko and David Haye which took place July 2 in Hamburg, Germany. We not only acknowledge that Wladimir Klitschko deserves to be recognized as THE heavyweight boxing champion of the world, but also rip the disgusting theatrics used to package a non-competitive fight as a major event. We also explain why those MMA fans who do not understand or appreciate boxing should be very careful in comparing these sports solely on the basis of this dreadful fight.
We also discuss a number of other issues, including a correction on the issue of the use of steroids and endurance in combat sports, the upcoming M-1 Challenge MMA card on July 8, the Rios-Antillon and Williams-Lara competing boxing cards on July 9, combat sports and the Olympic program, and more.

On this audio edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with veteran combat sports journalist Donovan Craig.
We opened with a discussion of the upcoming fight between two mixed martial arts legends, Fedor Emelianenko and Dan Henderson. They meet in a heavyweight fight in the main event of a Strikeforce-M-1 Global card this Saturday, July 30, at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, near Chicago, which will be telecast in the U.S. on Showtime. We discussed the histories of both fighters, their recent wins and losses, the likely balance of striking and grappling in this fight, how each fighter can win, and more.
Also, Donovan recently returned from a trip to the Philippines to cover a mixed martial arts event promoted by Pacific X-treme Combat (PXC) (http://pacificxtremecombat.com). We discussed the level of fighters on that card, the prospects for growth of MMA in Asia, and much more.

On this audio edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with middleweight champion Sergio Martinez and Darren Barker about their October 1 fight in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
We spoke with both Martinez and Barker at the kickoff news conference for this fight held Wednesday, July 20, in New York. We also spoke with Martinez's promoter Lou DiBella about this fight and why none of the major sanctioning bodies recognize Martinez as middleweight champion, even though Martinez is the linear champion and has not lost since capturing the title last year against Kelly Pavlik. Plus, we spoke with TV host Kristal Hart about this fight and how it epitomizes both the good and bad in boxing.
We open the show with a critique of the Amir Khan-Zab Judah fight, won by Khan with a fifth-round knockout on Saturday, July 23, in Las Vegas. While Khan was dominating the entire fight, the stoppage was controversial since what was ruled as the knockout punch appeared to be below the line separating legal and illegal blows which the referee specified in the prefight instructions. And we criticize the promotion for this fight.

On this audio edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman analyzes the main lessons of the Dan Henderson-Fedor Emelianenko heavyweight mixed martial arts fight, which took place July 30 as the main event of a Strikeforce card at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, near Chicago. In this fight, Henderson, the Strikeforce light heavyweight champion, won by TKO at 4:12 of the first round.
We explain why this loss by Fedor, his third in a row, does nothing to tarnish his legacy as a fighter after having gone undefeated for ten years. We discuss the wild brawling in this fight and what it says about the level of technique in MMA these days. We analyze the stoppage of this fight when Fedor was knocked out, and argue that not only was the stoppage not early, but was actually late. We discuss the dangers of fighters continuing to get hit after they are concussed on the ground. We note the torrent of negativity which this fight engendered. We comment on the release of Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem, and more.

On this audio edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Victor Conte.
Formerly at the center of the BALCO doping scandal, and after having served four months in prison in 2005 after pleading guilty to conspiracy to distribute steroids and money laundering, he now says that he has returned to helping train athletes the right and legal way. He presently runs SNAC, Scientific Nutrition for Advanced Conditioning (http://snac.com).
In addition, he has been involved in the training of a number of top boxers and mixed martial arts fighters. Among those is IBF 140-pound champion Zab Judah, who fights WBA champion Amir Khan in Las Vegas this Saturday night, July 23.
We spoke by phone with Victor Conte Wednesday night about his training of Zab Judah and why he believes that the 33-year-old Judah, a former junior welterweight and welterweight champion who has returned to his original weight class, will defeat the 24-year-old Khan. We of course discussed the issue of doping, and he criticized the present anti-doping procedures carried out by North American athletic commissions for boxing and MMA as "worthless". We discussed the Mayweather-Pacquiao controversy over what drug-testing such a proposed fight should have. He also described doping in MMA as "rampant". He called for much more scrutiny on the issue of testosterone replacement therapy, which many people believe has been abused by athletes in an attempt to conceal the use of performance-enhancing drugs.
In addition, he revealed that he is working with Dr. Margaret Goodman, the neurologist and former ringside physician and head of the Medical Advisory Board of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, on a new anti-doping project. Dr. Goodman is leading the effort to establish an organization called VADA, the Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency. This would have elite boxers and MMA fighters voluntarily submit to random, unannounced blood and urine testing using the protocols of WADA, the World Anti-Doping Agency. The goal would then be for their opponents to agree to such testing as well, and to help those many fighters who are against doping to combat the cheating in their sports.

On this audio edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses the successful first effort for the Ultimate Absolute (http://ultimateabsolutenyc.com) grappling event with finals winner Andre Galvao, runner-up Rustam Chsiev, BJJ and grappling legend Renzo Gracie, and event organizer Rob Constance.
The Ultimate Absolute was held Saturday, July 30, at the historic Hotel Pennsylvania in New York, right across the street from Madison Square Garden. It was a one-day, 16-man, single-elimination, open-weight grappling tournament. The winner won $10,000, while $1000 was awarded for every submission.
Right after his victory, we spoke with Andre Galvao, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world champion, about his victory and his plans. We spoke with Rustam Chsiev, who won the ADCC North American trials and has won numerous Grapplers Quest and NAGA titles, about this match, his background, and his plans. The thrilling final match of this tournament was scoreless after the ten-minute regulation, a five-minute overtime, and a ten-minute sudden death overtime. Galvao was declared the winner by the judges.
We also spoke with Renzo Gracie about the Ultimate Absolute, the tremendous technique on display by the athletes at it, and his plans to continue competing both in grappling and MMA. And we summed up the maiden voyage of the Ultimate Absolute with event organizer Rob Constance, himself a black belt and instructor for Renzo Gracie, and got his take on the plans to continue with this successful event.
