I often hear people complain about the lack of coverage wrestling receives locally. In truth it is rare that it receives as much publicity as basketball or football, particularly in the South. However, it pays to be aware of the limitations your local media outlets have; most would consider themselves understaffed; newspapers in particular are fighting financial solvency nation wide. If you are complaining but not taking any other action, are you part of the solution or part of the problem (sorry to be cliche')?

The advent of electronic news allows your local media outlet to harness the power of the people to provide news. 910Rec and 910Preps are two sites that have little financial overhead and provide a coverage outlet. They do have the same constraints as the newspaper that owns them; a lack of reporters. The good news; they will print it if you will write it. Take the time to understand and get to know your local media outlets and find out how you can leverage them. Once you make this initial investment, taking five minutes to write a short article weekly can pay big dividends. If you are not comfortable writing, enlist a parent, a staff member, a student, or a student athlete. Chances are, there is someone you know looking for another outlet for their literary talents.

The chance to give back, to say thank you, to show our appreciation is always welcome. Wrestlers as well as their families, coaches and communities receive so many intangibles from our sport that it is always nice when we can use the sport we love so much to give something tangible back.

Team Rhino, LLC is proud to announce on behalf of our partners that we are hosting a Pinning Down Autism tournament as part of Mat Madness 2010 in Fayetteville, NC. The tournament will be held on Sunday, 9 May 2010.

One hundred percent of the profit from this tournament will help fund North Carolina autism classrooms.

Mark your calendars now and visit the web page (http://www.rhinowrestling.org/pinningdownautism.html)for updates or subscribe to the tournament email list (http://www.rhinowrestling.org/mail/mail.cgi).

If you are interested in volunteering, partnering, or sponsoring please email us (rhinocoach@rhinowrestling.org) or call Marty at 910.824.0024. You can also check out the list of areas where we need help (http://www.rhinowrestling.org/pda/PDA_help.pdf) and our partnership form (http://www.rhinowrestling.org/Downloads/PDA_partnership_letter.pdf). Please print out copies of these and hand them out whenever you can.

We are less than a month away from Mat Madness 2010 and its culminating charity wrestling tournament, Pinning Down Autism! Things are definitely rolling and by all accounts, this event should be fantastic! And why not? Is there really anything better than participating in the greatest sport on the planet and contributing to a great cause? You are right, there is not!

Pinning Down Autism features FREESTYLE, GRECO ROMAN and MODIFIED FOLKSTYLE and complimentary age divisions for those styles to include a WOMEN’S FREESTYLE DIVISION. The amount of support this event is receiving is phenomenal and we are so thankful for it! Check out our Facebook event page and look at the list of people who have committed to attend. National Champ, Olympian, World Team member, State Champ, and Hall of Famer are just some of the titles you can put on them.

Thanks to Scott Casper and Takedown Radio and Television for being a leader in wrestling media and for helping us get the word out! Thanks to all of the officials, mat and pairing, who are donating their time, energy, talents, and resources. We can use more help so feel free to join them. Thanks to The Trophy House, Knockout Sportswear, and the Crown Center. Most of all thanks to all the individuals who have offered to help and to all the WRESTLERS who have committed to come and participate! We could not do this without you!

Let’s keep this thing rolling! Spread the word, register to participate, or make a donation! You won’t regret it!

We are ONE WEEK OUT from Mat Madness and the Pinning Down Autism tournament. The Pinning Down Autism has been received national recognition through Intermat and Takedown Radio. Currently there are Olympians, NCAA All Americans, NCAA Champions, numerous State Champions, and World Team members who have committed to attend. There is even a young lady from North Carolina, that has never wrestled before, registering to compete in the Women's Freestyle Division because she is so behind this charity wrestling tournament. The entry fee is inexpensive, there will be a free clinic featuring Mike Krause on Saturday afternoon, you can pay at the door on Sunday, and you can weigh in anytime between Friday and Sunday morning! What more can you ask for out of a tournament? Oh yes, custom medals awarded down to sixth place! Even if you are not planning on wrestling we can use your help handing out awards, working a table, or helping with weigh ins. We challenge every high school wrestling program in Cumberland County to work a table, volunteer in some way, or compete in this modified folkstyle tournament! You can REGISTER NOW at http://www.trackwrestling.com/registration/BasicPreReg1.jsp?tournamentGroupId=1219009 or visit http://www.rhinowrestling.org/pinningdownautism.html for more information!

Success can be measured in many ways; this weekend it was measured by attitude, competitive spirit, generosity and sportsmanship. I know that my family had a great time on Sunday and we are very happy with what was accomplished this weekend. Over the next couple of days we will be posting pictures and video on flowrestling, the PDA page on rhinowrestling.org, YouTube, Facebook, USAWrestlingnation.com and other sites. My goal is to get this done prior to heading to Tennessee on Wednesday evening to see my eldest daughter commissioned as a 2LT in the U.S. Army and then graduate from Carson Newman College. Our goal is to publish the next PDA tournament date within three weeks; we are shooting for a fall/winter 2010-2011 date and running a folkstyle event. A hearty THANK YOU to all of the officials (pairing and mat) from North Carolina Chapter of the USWOA and from the Southeastern Officials Association that donated their time and talents. It was great seeing you all sharing your experiences and knowledge with each other; to Mike Krause for driving from Michigan to run a fantastic free clinic on Saturday and for working with the wrestlers and coaches on Sunday, I saw many coaches and parents walk away awe-struck after Saturday's clinic, a smile fixed to their faces; thanks to Gameday Sportswear for coming from Akron, Ohio to support this event; to Clark Sporting Goods & the Trophy House for being our champion sponsor and doing such a great job on the medals; to Karen Long and the Crown Center Staff for being great hosts and donating the facility; to Stokes Lawn and Landscaping, Inc., Greenville (252-341-0673 ); special thanks to the Hunt family, the Berrian family, the Wanovich family, Coach DeWeese and the Raptors, and so many more for helping out over the weekend; to the Fayetteville Public Works Commission for keeping us all hydrated; all of you are truly appreciated!
